Unable to find Figma file

A few team members of our organization has been working on a prototype design project with our Figma file, but this morning, all of us have lost access to the file. And none of us could find anything in the trash folder, even with the file owner account. When we click back the original link, it says “This design file may have been deleted, moved, or made unavailable. Try reaching out to the file owner”. But none of us has deleted, or moved it. Now we could not find the file anywhere, and we have not received any deletion confirmation email either.

Hi @ACDC, thanks for reaching out!

This definitely sounds disruptive for your Organization. Are you able to share a URL link to the file?

With the file link, we can take a look at the backend and try to see what happened to it.

This should be our previous link - ink although it can’t be accessed any more.

Hi @ACDC, thanks for following up so quickly!

From what I can see on the backend, the file was in Tejaswini Vantigodi’s Team and trashed by the same user. You’ll want to reach out to them directly or anyone within their Team to check the Trash from within the team to restore and ensure the file’s recovery.

Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for helping looking into this.
This is actually one of our previous team member who has already left the organization. He transferred the file ownership to our current company email at [redacted PII - DJV 2/19/26] back in December, and from then this has been the email addresses that show up as the owner of the file, while everyone else is only “can edit” access. And we have removed his email from the access list after the transfer. So i’m not sure why he still has the ability to access and delete our file, yet none of us has received any email notification. In addition, none of the current team, including the current file owner (which is the company email address) has anything in the “trash” tab. Could you please check into this? Thanks

Hi @ACDC, thanks for the additional context!

From what we can see, the file still remained within his team, which is why he was able to delete it and why you likely aren’t able to see it in Trash.

My team here on the forum isn’t able to assist with File Management, but I’ve created ticket #1755661 on your behalf to connect you with our support team. They can help verify your ownership of the file and continue the process of getting it restored. If you have any further questions or context to provide, please reply directly to the support team via email.

Thank you.

Meanwhile, I’m reaching out to our previous member to check about restoration on his end. If possible and that could be done, we need help in transferring the file ownership to prevent this form happening again. I believe he followed the exact steps to transfer ownership previously, (in permissions and change a collaborator to owner) where on my end, it already has been showing the company email as file owner for quite some time, so Im not sure where went wrong.

Hi,

Our previous team member was able to find it in his trash and restore. Though we have the file back, but i dont understand why he is the only one able to find it in his trash folder while the rest of the team couldn’t. In addition, after the file restoration and logging in, it definitely shows our company email as the file owner instead of him, so I’m not sure where went wrong and we also need guidance on how to completely transfer this. Please see screenshot.

Our previous team member was able to find it in his trash and restore for us. After restoration, it honestly shows our company email as the owner instead of him, so im not sure where went wrong. To prevent this from happening again, I duplicated the file to a new project under our email address, now the project is named “ACDC Website”. Could you help check on the back end, this duplicate has us (ACDC) as the exact owner not another member? This could save us from transferring again.

Hi @ACDC, thanks for letting us know!

Glad to hear that you were able to restore the file. Please note that even after transferring ownership, as the creator of the file, they can still delete the file if they have can edit access to the file or the project it resides in. While ownership changes, anyone with edit access can still move files to the trash.

From what I can see on my end, the duplicate ACDC Website file is created by and owned by ACDC. This should definitely prevent this issue from happening again.
