Unable to Change Email Address on Existing Figma Account — Verification Link Expired, Email Already Taken, and Blank Red Box

Hello Team,

I'm trying to change the email address associated with my existing Figma account, but I've encountered several issues during the process. I'd appreciate help resolving this without losing access to my existing account or design files.

My goal

I want to change the email address of my existing Figma account from my current email ID i.e. [email redacted by forum moderator to remove PII] while retaining all my existing files, projects, and account data.

Here's what happened:

  1. I went to the settings of my existing Figma account and tried to change my email address to [redacted by forum moderator to remove PII].

  2. Figma prompted me to check my new email inbox and verify the address.

  3. When I clicked the verification link, Figma opened in my browser but displayed a dialog saying that the link had expired.

  4. I tried the verification process again. When I opened the link, Figma prompted me to log in. I tried logging in using my new Gmail account, but Figma said that the password was incorrect.

  5. I then selected the option to create an account using my new Gmail address and tried the email-change process again.

  6. This time, again it said the email has expired, So I decided to repeat the step again.

  7. And now, Figma displayed an error saying that the email address was already taken.

  8. I subsequently deleted the separate Figma account associated with my new Gmail address and tried changing the email on my original account again.

  9. After deleting the separate account, the email-change form stopped displaying the usual confirmation message. Instead, I now see only a blank red box when I enter my new email address and no change on the screen.

What I've tried so far:

  • Requesting new verification emails.

  • Opening the verification links in the same browser.

  • Attempting to log in when prompted during verification.

  • Creating and subsequently deleting the separate account associated with my new Gmail address.

Questions:

  • Why does the verification link expire when I open it even in the same browser?

  • Why does the email-change form on the old email id now display a blank red box and nothing happens?

  • Is there a way to resolve this without affecting my original Figma account or its files?

Any suggestions or guidance from the Figma team would be greatly appreciated. I can’t afford to lose the existing files, projects, and account data on my current id [redacted by forum moderator to remove PII].

Thank you!

Hey @dd1224750, thanks for reaching out!

For privacy and security reasons, I can’t look into account details here on the forum. I’ve created a support ticket (Ticket #2197293) so our team can review this directly.

Here’s what I’d suggest in the meantime:

  1. Hold off on further changes. Please don’t change the email again, delete anything, or create any new accounts for now. That way the team sees things as they currently are.
  2. Keep an eye on your inbox and spam folder. The team will follow up with you directly, and replies can occasionally land in spam.
  3. Check how you signed up. Open Settings, then the Account tab. If your email says Managed by Google, you signed up with Google single sign-on (SSO), which can’t be changed in Figma. Our Manage email address or password article covers each sign-up method.

Your education status is tied to the email address you verified with. If you update the email on your account after verification, your education status will be revoked.

Please also hold off on submitting another application or re-verifying. If you’re in higher education and you do see a “Verification Limit Exceeded” message, our Figma for Education article explains that the SheerID support team can reset it.

Could you let me know whether you originally signed up with Google or with an email address and password?

Thanks for your patience, someone from our team should be in touch soon!

Hi, thank you for your help!

I wanted to provide an update regarding my issue. I was finally able to change the email address associated with my existing Figma account successfully.

The difference this time was that, when the verification link prompted me to log in, I logged in using my original account credentials rather than trying to log in with the new email address or creating an account using the newer email id. After doing this, the email change went through successfully.

However, when I tried to verify my Education status again, I received the message “Verification Limit Exceeded.”

As you mentioned in your previous response, the SheerID support team may be able to reset the verification limit. Could you please guide me on how to proceed with this? Should I contact SheerID directly to request a reset, or can your team help me with the process?

I would like to restore my Figma Education verification using my new email address, if possible, while retaining my existing account, files, and projects.

Thank you again for your assistance. I appreciate your help in resolving this.

Thanks for the update! I’m really glad the email change went through, and thanks for sharing what worked.

“Verification Limit Exceeded” comes from SheerID, our verification partner. It means the number of attempts has been capped. Only SheerID can reset it, so they’re the best first stop.

  1. Email SheerID at figmasupport@sheerid.com. Mention you saw “Verification Limit Exceeded” after changing your account email.
  2. Education verification needs a school-issued email. Personal emails aren’t accepted.
  3. Avoid a VPN when you retry. If you upload documents, they need to prove your enrollment (course syllabuses won’t work).

SheerID usually replies within about 6 business days. If they can’t help, let me know here and I’ll get our Education team looped in.

Just to double check, could you let me know whether the new email on your account is your school-issued address? Our Figma for Education article covers the full verification steps.
