Hello Figma Support,

I'm unable to access a Figma file that I previously had access to in a team on the Free (Starter) plan.

Owner account: (redacted by the moderator due to PII)

File URL: [redacted by forum moderator to remove PII]

When I open the file using the original URL, it displays a "Request access" prompt instead of opening the file. I believe I previously had access to this file and would like to understand why my access was removed or whether the file was moved.

Could you please:

  • Verify whether the file still exists.

  • Confirm whether my access was removed or changed.

  • Help restore my access if possible, or advise on the appropriate next steps.

Thank you for your assistance.
Arbaaz Khan

Hey @arbaaz khan, thanks for reaching out!

I can see the file itself hasn't been deleted, and it’s located in A. S. team. So this looks like an possible access change rather than anything happening to the file. A "Request access" prompt on a file you previously had access to usually points to one of a few things:

  1. Explicit access to the file was removed by an owner or someone with edit access
  2. You were removed from the team the file belongs to, which also removes any access you had through it
  3. The file was moved to a different team or project you're not part of (A. S. team.)
  4. Sharing settings changed on the team or file (for example, switching from team-wide access to invite-only)

A good first step: check if you can still see the team or project this file used to belong to in your file browser. If the team's gone from your list entirely, that's a strong sign your team access was changed. If you can still see the team but not the file, it's more likely a file-level change.

I can't look into account specifics on the forum for security reasons, so if it turns out to be neither of those and you're still stuck, I'd recommend reaching out to the file owner (Aman) first to confirm, they'll be able to see and adjust your access directly.

For more on how access works across teams, projects, and files, this is a good rundown: Guide to sharing and permissions.

Let me know how it goes!
