Question

This file type can't be used as image fill

I work with large formats, such as vertical banners for events. Many of these designs use large photos to fit the banner layout. I usually create a frame and change the fill to load a photo from my files. It rarely works. Most of the time, I get the error shown in the attached screenshot.

This error is incredibly frustrating because it seriously affects my ability to deliver and the amount of time I spend on these projects. My method for processing an image and saving it as a JPG is always the same, and I use Photoshop for that.

Could someone please explain why this error happens and if there’s another way to incorporate large images into my designs? It’s hard to believe that Figma would be so limited for such a common use of images.

Hi @Fábio Gomide,

I understand that you’re frequently encountering the error message “This file type (.jpg) can’t be used as image fill” when trying to upload an image using the color picker, and that these images were exported as JPGs from Photoshop.

I tried uploading relatively large JPG photos on my end to reproduce the error, but I haven’t been able to replicate it so far.

Since Figma supports JPG files, the tool might not be functioning as expected. However, before we proceed with a more detailed investigation on our end, could you please confirm the following?

  • Are you encountering this issue in the desktop app, a supported browser, or both? Also, please make sure you’re using the latest version of the app or browser.

  • Does this issue happen in a specific file, or across all your files?

  • If you drag and drop the same JPG file directly onto the canvas, or go to Main menu (Figma icon) → File → Place image/video, does the same error occur?

If you’re still experiencing the issue after checking the points above, please share a sample JPG image and your findings so we can try to reproduce the issue on our end.

This will help us understand what you’re seeing and how we can best assist.

If you’d prefer to share your sample file and a video of the issue privately, please follow the steps described here to submit a bug report so our team can investigate this further: Submit a bug report

Thanks,

Hello Junko3!

  • I only use the desktop app
  • Across all files
  • A different error occurs when I drag and drop the same JPG file directly onto the canvas (see screenshot below).
  • When I try to import the file via de menu, the error below occurs:

I can't upload the JPG file here. A message says it's too big.

Thank you!
