Swapping variable mode does not update font family or style

We recently updated the font family for our second brand (mode). Everything is working as expected in the design system library file. However, when I navigate to another file that uses that library of components and I switch the variable mode, it doesn’t switch my font (family or style, since they’re named differently), and it will sometimes say my font-family is missing. What am I supposed to do?
