Sharing permissions on professional plan with other others

I’m fairly new to Figma and like it a lot - I was using the free features quite happily and was able to share files in Draft and Team account with other users.

I upgraded to Pro so I could use the Figma plugin for ChatGPT - as it had a 6 MCP allowance per day, which is not enough to be productive.

Now I can’t share any file with anyone unless they have a full pro licence, they have to request edit access, and it means I have to approve and foot the bill.

So by upgrading I’ve lost functionality I had when it was free, WTF?

Have I missed something? I want to cancel it so I can go back to using the platform with the free functions!

Hey @Charles Johnston 👋 Welcome to our community. Happy to help get things clarified. Let’s dig in together.

Here's what's happening: on the Starter plan, editing a file doesn't require a paid seat. Once you're on the Professional plan, Figma switches to seat-based billing. Anyone who needs to edit a file needs a paid seat. Free View seats still exist; collaborators can view and comment, but they can't edit.

In this case, it sounds like the upgrade gave you the increased MCP calls you needed, but it also brought sharing under the seat-based model (which wasn't the goal).

Here are two paths forward:

  • Reach out to support for billing help: Account and subscription specifics aren't something we can resolve directly here in the forum, but you can open a billing-related support ticket here — link.

  • Stay on the Professional plan, but adjust how you share: Give collaborators View access (free, comment-only) instead of Full seats or Collab seats. This keeps your higher MCP allowance active without you footing a Full-seat bill for every collaborator. I know this doesn’t fully hit the ideal middle ground you’re after (free edit access alongside increased MCP calls), but it can help manage costs.

If you have any other questions, please let me know! — Jaycee

Thanks Jaycee, this is a case of shooting oneself in the foot… I’ve cancelled my pro-subscription and I still can’t access the sharing features until the Subscription Ends… next month! Brilliant.
