Same name layer copy-paste not working inside a layer

Seems like if I have structure

  1. Layer 1
    1. Sub-layer 1

And I want to duplicate Sub-layer 1 so that the structure would be

  1. Layer 1
    1. Sub-layer 1
    2. (Copy of) Sub-layer 1

Then, when I select Layer 1 and paste inside it OR simply select Sub-layer 1 from the list and do cmd+c/v, the copy-pasting doesn’t work as expected.

What actually happens is

  1. Layer 1
    1. Item 1
  2. Item 1

Correct pasting happens if the layers are autonamed, e.g. as Frame 1234, but if I have custom named the layer, then pasting does not work

Using latest Figma version

Testing this more - this is weidly broken. Moving the pasted layers from the wrong upper container to the correct lower one seems to fix the pasting issue.

Hey @designer-1234 — welcome to Figma Forum, and thanks for calling this out.

I tested this on the Figma Desktop App (version 126.2.10) and wasn't quite able to replicate what you're describing. To make sure I'm looking at the right thing and can get this in front of the right team, it would be helpful to know:

  1. Screen recording: If you're able, could you share a brief recording of this in action? Please include the layers panel and properties panel so we can see the full picture.
  2. Reordering test: Does dragging and dropping the layers directly in the layers panel change the copy/paste behavior? I'm curious whether there's a layer overlap that might be causing the wrong element to get copied.
  3. Layers panel alternate: As an alternate solution, does selecting and copying layers directly from the layers panel (using Shift or Command to multi-select) instead of in the canvas give you the expected result?
  4. Impact on your workflow: Is this blocking a specific outcome, or more of an efficiency issue? If so, can you share a bit more on that?

Thanks for helping me see what you're running into — I'll keep an eye out for your reply.
