[Resolved] CPU goes to 100% after opening Figma Preview

Hey guys, lately I have been facing a performance issue with the figma preview funcionality. I work with web design and once I have my design finished I usually visualize the result with the Preview feature. But right now it seems that my CPU and laptop fans go crazy.

If I open the preview mode into another dedicated tab to have it fullscreen its even worse and my CPU literally stays in the 95% to 100% range. To make it worst, once I kill the preview tab to stop overloading my CPU, it still remains at 95% to 100% with the fans going crazy, so I need to kill Figma in Task manager and reopen it.

The simple solution for now is to not use the preview/presentation functionality, but I would like to see if someone else is suffering from the problem and insights on what can be done.

Hello @David Fernandes — Tom here, stepping in for @ksn to follow up. This goes for @Aliero, @Greg97, and @HassanBaloch24 too, since you all hit the same thing.

Good news: The engineering team has shipped a fix for the CPU spike on Preview/Present.

Refresh your tab (or restart the Figma Desktop App), and it should behave normally again. ✅

If any of you still see the spike after refreshing, reply here and I'll get it back in front of the team.

I will have someone on our technical quality team reach out to you for further investigation. Is this happening across multiple files you try to preview?

Can you recall an estimated time you started noticing this become an issue?

Also -- if you try duplicating the file, do you still notice a spike happen when trying to preview?

Hi ksn, thanks for getting back to me.

This happens across every file I try to preview.

I first noticed the issue on September 18 at around 10:00 AM CEST. I had not experienced this behavior before that date.

I also tested this with a completely new and very simple file containing only one frame, two rectangles and one text layer.

After completely closing and reopening Figma Desktop, the first Preview of this file takes around 2 minutes 40 seconds to load. During that time, Figma uses around 70–80% CPU and freezes for the entire duration, making the PC almost unusable.

If I close the Preview and open it again without closing Figma, it takes around 25 seconds.

I can also reproduce the same behavior on Figma Web. The first preview takes around 1 minute to load and if I close the preview and open it again, it takes less than 10 seconds.

Duplicating the file does not change the behavior either.

OS infos: Windows 11 26H2 - 26300.9539
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7300HQ CPU @ 2.50GHz (2.50 GHz)
RAM: 24,0 Go
Figma Desktop & Chrome: Latest version

Hi, today any frame I try to prototype using “Present” freezes. When I choose “Preview” (the windowed preview), it works fine.

Running Figma in Edge seems to have no issues.

My setup is an Asus Vivobook with an i9, Windows 11, and an RTX 3050.

Experiencing the exact same issue since yesterday. Whenever I hit the Present button on the desktop app, my CPU spikes straight to 100% and freezes everything.
Interestingly, previewing the exact same file directly in the browser works totally fine without choking the system.
