I love Figma but I literally don’t know how to resize a Frame without destroying my Design.

The Issue is, that this doesn’t always happen. I have literally 2 frames in my view where one is working the way I expect it to, and the other resizes its children with it. I compared the settings I and I just don’t find the difference.

Repro:

  1. Create a Frame
  2. Put Elements inside of it. Lets say you make a Website or App
  3. Notice that you need more space in the frame for example to show stuff that is out of view.
  4. Try to resize the Frame

Expectation:

  1. When pulling on the sides or corners of the Frame only the size of the Frame moves.
  2. OR: Double click the Frame to deselect the contents of the frame.
  3. OR: So setting in the Frame where you can easily choose how you want to resize the Frame, with a good visualization for each mode, so I know in which mode I am.

Reality:

There is no way to change the Size of the Frame without changing the elements inside of it.

Also there are a number of Posts with similar Issues (which don’t work for me).

Note: The Setting is supposed to be on the Frame and not its elements. I am not creating a Website in a Frame with 100 elements → copy it →  want to change the size → have to change a setting for each element.

Note: The Contraints in an Element don’t seem to make a difference for me. Also I needed Chatgpt and Google to find that setting. (Edit: They do a bit, but the content still moves, but at least they don’t get compressed or similar)

Note: Figma trains me as a user that if I select an element, that I can resize it. If it is grouped, then I can still select it with double-clicks. The Frame is the only thing that I can’t single out, which is very frustrating.

EDIT:

It seems one temporary solution is to:

  1. select all elements in a frame.
  2. click on this contraint button that is only findable if you do AI, Google and Figma Forum Research to disable the Contraints.
  3. select the Frame
  4. Press Ctrl while you resize the Frame.

But while this is a solution for now, it is still one with a very bad UX, because:

  1. The button is next to unfindable/noticable nor can I immediately understand what its for, since it isn’t a common icon nor really self-explanatory.
  2. Contraints is a very generic term that doesn’t tell me what it really does, how that has to do with resizing the frame.
  3. I as a user need know (my coworker told me) that pressing ctrl yields the desired result.
