'Remove background' alters colors

It seems that the native 'Remove background' AI functionality now alters the colors of the original image, making it hard to achieve consistency across multiple images.

Hi @Jurgen_Genser1, welcome to Figma Forum and thanks for reporting this.

I tested the Remove background feature on both JPG and PNG files and wasn't able to pick up on a significant color shift. One thing I did notice in my file is a perceived difference once the background is removed and the image sits directly on the white canvas. The visual contrast initially made colors appear slightly different even when they haven't changed. Could that explain what you're seeing?

If not, the following would help me dig deeper before escalating:

  1. File type: What format are the images you're working with (JPG, PNG, etc.)?
  2. Image size: What's the pixel dimension (width × height)?
  3. Nature of the color change: How would you describe it — is it an overall hue shift, or limited to certain areas of the image?
  4. Layer context: Is the image standalone, part of a component, or sitting within a specific frame or layout?
  5. Before and after: If you're able to share a screenshot comparing the image before and after removing the background, that would be really helpful.

Thanks again — I'll keep an eye out for your reply!

thanks for your reply! the issue is quite new - it was still working as expected a week ago… here are my answers:

  1. PNG (e.g. copied via clipboard from the browser)
  2. image size ist quite small - e.g. 1024x1024px
  3. it’s a hue shift - the image looks much more saturated after the background removal
  4. standalone image
  5. can’t post the actual image due to brand restrictions

Appreciate you confirming, @Jurgen_Genser1 — completely understand about sharing the actual image.

I did some more testing with a PNG file and was able to reproduce some color shifting around the edges, especially at smaller sizes. Here's an example from my test:

Original vs. Background Removed

The top image is the original, and the bottom has the background removed — you can see the saturated colors along the edge. Does that match what you're seeing, or is the color shift indeed spreading across the entire image? And how noticeable is the saturation change in your case?

One solution I've found: You can clean up the edges using the Pen tool with a Subtract boolean operation. It works well for simpler shapes, though I realize it may hit a limit with more intricate images. Would that be a viable option for your workflow?

If you can share a bit more about how this is impacting your work, that'll help me raise the specifics with the product team. Thanks for working through this with me.

thanks for the insights! the color shift is indeed spreading across the entire image. As described it becomes much more saturated after the background removal, so I have to adjust the image manually afterwards. I would say that it specifically affects red /orange shades.
