Refund Request – Individual Pro Plan Purchased Under Misunderstanding (No Access to Intended Feature)

Hi Figma Support Team,

I'm writing to request a cancellation and refund for my recently purchased Professional (Full Seat) plan at $20/month, which I subscribed to under a fundamental misunderstanding of how Figma's permission system works.

What happened:

A colleague invited me to collaborate on their team project. After accepting the invitation, I noticed I only had view-only access and could not edit any files. Assuming this was a plan limitation on my end, I immediately upgraded to an individual Professional plan, expecting it would grant me editing access to the team project.

However, after subscribing, I still have no editing rights in the team project. The $20 charge has been applied, but I am completely unable to use the feature I paid for.

What I've since learned:

I now understand that in Figma, editing permissions within a team are governed by the team's plan and the seat assignments made by the team admin — not by the individual subscriber's plan tier. My individual Pro plan only upgrades my own personal workspace/team, and has zero effect on edit access in another team's project.

This critical distinction was not clearly communicated during the upgrade flow. There was no warning or prompt indicating that upgrading my personal plan would not resolve my access issue on an external team's project. A user in my situation would very reasonably — and incorrectly — assume that having a paid plan would grant broader editing capabilities.

What I'm requesting:

  1. Preferred: Full refund of the $20 charge and cancellation of the subscription, as the plan has not been used for any purpose and the purchase was made based on a misunderstanding reinforced by the lack of contextual guidance in the upgrade flow.
  2. If a refund is not possible: Please clarify the official reason, and advise on the correct steps to gain editing access to my colleague's team project (i.e., what the team admin needs to do on their end, or whether I need a different type of plan/seat).

I have not used any Professional plan features since subscribing, and the subscription was created ㅓjust an hour ago. I believe this situation reflects a genuine UX gap in the upgrade flow that may affect other users as well.

I'd appreciate a prompt response. Thank you for your time.

Hey @Gina Chung - thank you for writing in and providing your feedback on the upgrade/seat purchase flow. First, I want to acknowledge 2 things:

  1. I removed the information you provided at the bottom of your original message that included your account email and invoice information -- we want to make sure to protect your personal information, so in full transparency, I edited your post to do that.
  2. It looks like you had filed a ticket with the support team, and that you were provided a refund for the seat purchase -- if you did not receive an email confirming that, please let me know.

To address your feedback:

I now understand that in Figma, editing permissions within a team are governed by the team's plan and the seat assignments made by the team admin — not by the individual subscriber's plan tier. My individual Pro plan only upgrades my own personal workspace/team, and has zero effect on edit access in another team's project.

This critical distinction was not clearly communicated during the upgrade flow. There was no warning or prompt indicating that upgrading my personal plan would not resolve my access issue on an external team's project. A user in my situation would very reasonably — and incorrectly — assume that having a paid plan would grant broader editing capabilities.

Thanks for sharing the specifics of your expectations and experience with access transparency here -- you’ve mentioned that the process is clearer now, but I’ll briefly touch on a solution for the future:

If you’re able to open a file but don’t have edit access, you can request it directly from the file. Open the file and click “Request edit access” in the top-right corner. This sends a notification to the team admins or file owners so they can review the request and assign an editor seat if appropriate.

I’ll make note of your feedback, and relay it to the teams who work on billing. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts!
