Question about upgrading from Figma Make to Figma Design

Hello,

I created a project using Figma Make on the free Starter plan.

Before upgrading to a Professional Full Seat, I would like to confirm something.

If I upgrade my account, will I be able to:

  1. Open or copy my existing Figma Make project into Figma Design?
  2. Edit it as a regular Figma Design file (editable layers, text, shapes, Auto Layout, etc.)?
  3. Export it as a PDF from Figma Design?

More specifically, I want to know whether upgrading will work with my existing Figma Make project, or if this functionality only applies to projects created after the upgrade.

  1. Bringing your Figma Make project into Figma Design: Yes, this is possible using the Copy design feature inside Figma Make. From the preview of your Figma Make file, get to whichever page or state you want to bring over, then click Copy design at the top of the preview. It converts that view into a collection of design layers you paste onto the canvas of a Figma Design file. Full steps here: Copy a Figma Make preview as design layers.
  2. Editing it like a regular Figma Design file: Once pasted, yes. Those layers behave like any other layer in Figma Design. You can restyle, resize, edit text, rearrange, and apply Auto Layout just like anything built natively there.
  3. Exporting as a PDF: Also yes, and nothing Make-specific here. Since it's now a normal Figma Design file, you'd use Figma Design's standard export flow (select your frames, then use the Export section in the right sidebar to add a PDF configuration).

On whether this works with your existing project specifically: yes, it will. When you upgrade, you're upgrading a specific team (not just your account), and that covers every file already sitting in that team, not just files created afterward. So as long as you upgrade the same Starter team your Figma Make project currently lives in, it'll be covered automatically. (Just double check you're upgrading that same team, rather than starting a brand-new one, since the paid features only apply to the team you actually upgrade.)

A few things worth knowing going in:

  • Copy design captures a snapshot of whatever page/state you're viewing. For a multi-page app, you'd repeat this once per page.
  • The design layers aren't linked back to your Figma Make file, so edits on one side won't sync to the other.
  • They're not automatically tied to your design system. You'll manually connect components and styles once pasted in.
  • Interactive behavior (like a dropdown) comes across as a static layer, not a working interaction.
