Question

Prototype viewer creates a blank white area, shifts the layout, and stops responding to clicks

When using Figma’s web-based prototype presentation mode, a large blank white area sometimes appears on the right side of the screen.

Once the white area appears, the prototype stops responding to clicks. The left panel containing the prototype list is pushed further to the left, the presentation layout becomes misaligned, and unexpected horizontal or vertical scrollbars may appear.

The prototype remains unusable until the entire browser page is fully refreshed. A complete refresh temporarily restores everything to its normal state.

Disabling scrolling inside the prototype frames does not resolve or prevent the issue.

The issue occurs during normal interaction with the prototype. Sometimes it is triggered while hovering over an interactive element: the intended interaction appears to start rendering but fails, after which the blank white area appears and the prototype becomes unresponsive.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open a prototype in Figma’s web presentation mode.
  2. Navigate through and interact with the prototype normally.
  3. A large blank white area occasionally appears on the right side.
  4. The prototype stops responding to clicks.
  5. The left panel containing the prototype list is pushed to the left.
  6. Unexpected horizontal or vertical scrollbars may appear.
  7. Fully refresh the browser page to restore normal behaviour.

Expected result

The prototype should remain correctly positioned within the available presentation viewport, continue responding to clicks and interactions, and preserve the position of the left prototype-list panel.

Actual result

A large blank white area appears on the right side of the prototype viewer.

After it appears:

  • The prototype stops responding to clicks.
  • The left prototype-list panel is pushed to the left.
  • The presentation layout becomes misaligned.
  • Unexpected horizontal and vertical scrollbars may appear.
  • Some hover interactions fail to render.
  • Only a complete browser-page refresh restores normal behaviour.

Troubleshooting already attempted

  • Disabled scrolling inside the prototype frames.
  • Confirmed that the issue is not caused by intentional frame scrolling.
  • Reloaded and reopened the prototype.

Disabling frame scrolling does not fix the issue.

Impact

This makes the prototype unreliable and unusable during client presentations and design reviews. Once the issue occurs, the prototype cannot be navigated or interacted with until the entire browser page is refreshed.

Environment

  • Figma web app
  • Google Chrome
  • Windows 11 Pro
  • Desktop browser
  • Prototype presentation mode

Hi, @George_Railean. Thanks for your post and for the detailed write-up - it’s very helpful in understanding what you are seeing and how it’s disrupting your ability to present a prototype.

Ultimately, I will help make a ticket for you with our Technical Quality team, but first I have a few followup questions to help refine all your troubleshooting a bit more:

  • Are you seeing this with any file you test with, or is it specific to the file in your screenshots?
  • If it’s just one file, do you see this with all prototypes within the file?
  • Do you see this same behavior if you use the Figma Desktop app rather than a web browser?

only specific pages trigger this bug. i can’t seem to grasp the reason behind this. i was always using the web version since day one.

similar issue happened in the community about a year ago, and you guys fixed it, here’s the link

Ok, thanks for the additional information! I’ve filed a ticket with our Technical Quality team for you - you should get that via email shortly. When you have a moment, can you reply to that with any additional information? I included a screenshot and a link to this post, so it would also be helpful to reply to that with a share link to the file in question, as well as which pages in particular are problematic. Be sure to also share the file with support-share@figma.com with view access (this doesn’t affect your billing). Thanks for your patience and let me know if you have any other questions!

George_Railean

i won’t share my files with you. you know the problem; you fixed it before

The problem in the other thread is from a year ago, so it’s hard to say without looking at a file if it’s the same root cause or not. Having said that, you don’t need to share your file if you’d rather not, and I alerted the team that your ticket may be the same root cause as the other recent report. Thank you again for your patience while our team investigates!
