Pasting Figma links into Figma Make's AI chat

I am creating a personal hub where tiles link to various places related to my workflow. Some of these tiles link to Figma files, but Figma Make’s AI agent won’t let me paste Figma URLs in the chat box. I had to bypass it by breaking the URL with specific characters while asking the Figma Make agent to remove those specific characters (Example: giving the agent https://www.figmddda.com/design/WIM and telling it to remove the ‘ddd’). A better solution is Figma just allows us to paste in Figma links then add a dialogue explaining situations where pasting Figma frames would be better - because my situation needs the Figma URL, not a frame.

Hey hey @Melissa_Rausch 🤩 Happy to keep helping.

The block applies to any Figma URL, including files you own. From the Figma Make FAQs: "Can I paste links to my files into the AI chat? No." The reason is that Make will try to interpret the URL as something to build from rather than treating it as a link.

That guardrail is aimed at a problem you don't actually have, though — you want the URL as a link destination, not as design input.

Try this instead of breaking the URLs with extra characters:

  • Ask Make to build your tiles with placeholder links
  • Open the code editor and paste your real Figma URLs into the href values there
  • The chat filter isn't involved, so the URLs stay intact, and they won't get rewritten by later prompts the way the reconstructed ones might

Does this sound right as your feature request? – When someone pastes a Figma link, Make should ask what you meant — attach the design, or use it as a link — instead of blocking it outright.

Hey @Melissa_Rausch 👋 Thanks for the interesting questions. The can be a few factors here. Let’s work on it!

Two questons:

  • Where did you copy each Figma link from — the Share dialog, the browser address bar, or right-click → "Copy link to selection"? These don't all produce the same link: a selection/address-bar link carries a node ID and opens to a specific frame, while a Share-dialog link (with nothing selected) opens the file itself
  • Who's meant to open this hub — just you, or others too? A Figma link only opens for people who have access to that file, so if you'll be sharing the hub, it's worth confirming each linked file's sharing settings

Thanks for the additional details! — Jaycee

@Jaycee Lewis Thank you for your response. Here are details:

  • I used the Share dialogue’s ‘Copy link’ in the Editor via the Figma desktop app. These links should be to Figma files - I am not trying to link to a selection.
  • This hub is mainly personal - I use it for myself, but I have shared the hub link with my team and setup permissions to my organization. All Figma files posted in my hub have similar permissions (open to my organization only).

👋 Thanks @Melissa_Rausch , that all makes sense on the link setup — file-level Share links, org-scoped access.

To clarify, so I can reproduce exactly what you're seeing:

  • When Make blocks the paste, is it right as you're starting a new file, or partway through an ongoing chat where your hub already exists and you're asking it to add/edit a link?
  • Does it happen every time you paste a Figma URL, or only sometimes / with certain links?
  • Is it throwing a waring or erorr message after pasting link?

Thanks! — Jaycee

@Jaycee Lewis

  • It’s partway through an ongoing chat. It used to accept these types of pasted links in previous messages
  • It now happens every time I paste a Figma URL
  • It’s throwing an error message

@Jaycee Lewis Thanks for pointing out the code editor. I will use that method. Yes, that feature request is correct!
