Owner locked in View Only mode

File opens as view-only even though I am the file Owner

The file is not in a team; it is in drafts / no team

Banner says: an admin needs to update your seat so you can edit

When I select Ask to edit, it changes to Request Sent

No request email arrives, and I should not need to request access to my own file

I have been editing this project for over a year

Expected result: the file should open in edit mode for my account

Actual result: I am locked out of editing my own file

Hey there, Céline from the Figma Community Support team here! I’m sorry you’re locked out of a file you own. You’re right that, as the owner, you shouldn’t need to request file-level access from yourself.

The message about an admin updating your seat suggests Figma may be treating this as a seat request, rather than a request for permission to the file. (Those requests are sent to the relevant plan admin, which may explain why you aren’t receiving an email yourself.) Since you’re seeing this on a file that appears to be in your personal Drafts and not in a team, our support team will need to check the file’s underlying Drafts location and the seat currently associated with your account.

I’ve gone ahead and create a support ticket on your behalf so the support team can take a closer look at it. For reference, your case number is 2121256, sent to your email address: kxxxxo@gxxxl.xxm. In the form, please share directly there:

  • The affected file URL
  • The email address used to sign in to Figma
  • A screenshot of the seat message
  • Approximately when you last edited the file successfully
  • Whether the file has been shared with anyone else

It will be helpful for our team for investigation, thank you!

Update: The support agent is waiting for your response to investigate it further. Please check your inbox when you can, thank you! As they will take it from here, I’ll close this topic for now, thank you.
