Number variable for font weight doesn't override the italic style

I’ve been using number variables for font weight and switching to string variables when we have italic weights. If the “Italic” is already selected in the weight/style field, then apply and number variable for a weight change, then italic style remains. I expected the style to switch to normal. Is this the right behavior? I’d like to stay with numbers for weight, but if they don’t override the style I’ll have to reconsider.

I was searching through the forum looking for how other designers handle font weight variables when dealing with italic versions. We all know we should be using number variables for font weight over string variables but how do we handle Italic versions of the same weight ? We need to go with string variables after all ! is this correct?

*Even tho Figma themselves tell us to use number variables!
