Not able to duplicate variable groups after new fullpage variable layout

I understand you’re having trouble duplicating variable groups after the variables view update.

I tested this on my side, and duplicating a group is working as expected in both the Chrome browser and the Figma Desktop app. I also checked internally but wasn’t able to find any similar reports so far.

To start with a quick check, could you please try the following?

• Browser: Force-quit your current browser session and open Figma in a brand-new browser window.
• Desktop app: Force-quit the Figma Desktop app, then restart it.

If the issue still continues, could you please let us know the following so we can investigate further?

• Does this happen in the browser, the desktop app, or both?
• When you select a group within a collection, do you see the “Duplicate group” option in the right-click menu?
  • If not, please share a screenshot of what you’re seeing. Also, please double-check that you’re selecting a group (not a collection) in the variables sidebar by expanding the variables modal or scrolling within the sidebar.

With this information, I can escalate the issue to our team if needed.

Hello Junko3 and thank you for the reply. Below are my answers to your questions:

1. Occurs in both Desktop app and browser
2. I have restarted both browser and desktop app multiple times, and I have restarted my macbook
3. Issue still exists - Attaching 2 screenshots. One is the right click on a group and the other is the right click on a variable. On a group it doesnt show anything, while on a variable it does the expected menu

me and my team are facing the same issue. after this fullscreen update we are not finding the option to right click on a group and make a duplicate of it. is there a fix for this? Restarted the desktop tool and browser but the issue is still there. Please help this is delaying projects. 

also paste function is not working when trying to copy value from one value field to another. i am not being able to paste a value, say a hexcode into the value column 

I need the copy and paste function ASAP. This is so frustrating. I also don’t like the sidebar functionality. I need to see the page and the variables at the same time (this issue is why I cam to the support forum - I hate the sidebar for variables).

I completely understand your frustration and how this must be affecting your workflow. On the copy/paste issue: this is something we've been tracking, and a fix was rolled out for the right-click/duplicate group bug that affected the variables panel after the fullscreen update.

That said, I want to make sure the copy/paste behavior you're running into is fully resolved for you. Could you let us know which specific action isn't working? For example, is it pasting a hex value into a color variable's value field or something else? And are you seeing this in the browser, the desktop app, or both?

On the sidebar vs. fullscreen view: I hear you. If you'd like to get back to viewing variables alongside your canvas at the same time, you can collapse the fullscreen variables view back to the modal by clicking the collapse icon in the top-right corner of the variables panel. This should let you work in both spaces simultaneously again.

I’m having the same problem when right click on the groups. Literraly nothing happen when I right click on it. This is frustrating as it is blocking my work right now.

I understand the urgency and how this must be slowing down your workflow. Again, this turned out to be a known issue tied to a recent update to the variables view, and our engineering team already shipped a fix for the group right-click/duplicate menu. A couple of quick things that will help us confirm if this is a new issue:

1. Could you do a hard refresh (or fully quit and relaunch if you're on desktop) and let us know if the right-click menu on groups is back?
2. On the paste issue with hex codes, is that happening in the same fullscreen variables view? A fix went out for a similar paste bug recently too, so I want to make sure we're not looking at a new variant.
3. If either issue is still happening after a refresh, could you share whether you're in the browser, desktop app, or both, and share a quick screen recording if possible?

1. I did all of it, and I even tried on different browsers (Chrome, Brave), incognito mode, but still it didn’t work.
2. I can’t copy & paste the groups, both in full-screen and modal view. Other than that, everything is working as expected.
3. I tried in Chrome, Brave, and also in Desktop App. I will try to record it when I have the time.

Are you trying to right-click on the Groups header text in order to make a new group? To create a group, CMD/CTRL click on the variables you want to group, then right-click on those variables - you’ll see the option there to create a new group. Once the group has been made, you can right-click on that group to duplicate, delete, or ungroup it. Let us know if this doesn’t work and we’ll go from there!
