My personal and work Figma accounts seem to have merged — personal files disappeared

Hi everyone, I really need help with a serious issue.

I used Figma on the same computer with two different accounts:
– a personal account (used only in the browser)
– a work account (used in the macOS desktop app)

Recently something strange happened: the projects from my work account started showing up inside my personal account in the browser. My personal files — ones I’ve been working on for years — have completely disappeared. The trash is empty, and search finds nothing.

Even when Figma shows the correct personal account in the browser, the content inside it still belongs to the work account. It looks as if the accounts somehow “merged” or the workspace data got overwritten.

I’ve already checked the forum and tried all basic actions (clearing cache, different browsers, incognito mode, logging out of all devices, etc.). Nothing helped.

This is extremely important to me — the missing files contained long-term creative work, and losing them would be devastating. I’m hoping someone from the Figma team or community can help me understand what happened and whether it’s possible to restore those files.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Кирилл Малышев

I understand that your goal is to stay logged into your personal account in the browser and your work account in the Figma Desktop app.

From what you described, it sounds like your browser may currently be showing your work account in the File Browser. To better understand what’s going on, could you try the steps below?

  1. Open the File Browser at https://www.figma.com/

  2. Click your account menu in the top-left

  3. Hover over Edit profile

  4. Check the email address shown there — this is the account that is actually logged in

If this email isn’t your personal account, please log out of the File Browser and sign back in using your personal Figma account email.

After signing in with your personal account, please confirm:

  • Do you see the correct teams and projects for that account?

  • Can you find any of your missing files? (If you have access to multiple teams, please switch between team and check the Drafts and Trash sections as well.)

Guide to the file browser

You mentioned using your work account in the Desktop app.
If you log in using Google SSO, Figma opens a browser window to complete authentication, which can cause your work account to remain logged in in the browser.

Log in or add accounts

If you have multiple accounts, you can also stay logged into more than one and switch between them:

Switch between accounts

If you’ve confirmed you’re logged into the correct account but still see the wrong teams/projects/files, could you share the following?

  • A screen recording (full window visible) showing:

    • Your account menu

    • The teams/projects that appear

    • What you see when trying to find your personal files

  • The URL of the missing file

This will help us investigate further and escalate to the appropriate internal team if needed.

Alternatively, if you prefer to share this information privately:

You can select “Contact us” from the (?) icon in the app, or go to Hi there. How can we help? → type your question → click Start Chat.

The chatbot will then help you open an email case with our Support team.

Thanks,
