My own avatar temporarily appears multiple times in the presence bar

I've noticed an intermittent issue with the presence avatars in Figma.

While I'm working in a file, my own profile avatar sometimes appears multiple times in the presence/collaborator bar at the top of the file. It usually duplicates into two or sometimes three instances of my avatar.

The duplicated avatars only remain visible for a few seconds and then disappear. This behavior can occur repeatedly while I'm working in the same file.

I'm not intentionally opening the same file in multiple tabs or windows when this happens.

Has anyone else experienced this behavior? Is this a known presence or synchronization issue in Figma?

I've seen this myself, and in my case it traced back to a second session. A couple of things to watch for that may explain what you’re seeing:

The Figma Desktop App running in the background while you're also in the browser (or vice versa)
A second window, a pinned tab, or the file open in Present/prototype view alongside the editor

If those don’t account for what you’re experiencing, please provide a few more details to help me narrow it down:

Does this happen in specific files, or in any file regardless of type?
Are you seeing it in the browser or app version — and is the other one open at the same time? If you're in a browser, it's worth confirming it's on a supported version: What are the system requirements for Figma? → Browsers and operating systems.
Does it line up with anything network-related — a Wi-Fi drop or waking the machine from sleep?
If you hover or click the duplicated avatars, do they behave identically, or does one of them do something different?
How is this affecting your work — is it just visual noise, or is it causing confusion about who's actually in the file with you?

And if you can catch a short screen recording of the avatars appearing and disappearing, that would be very helpful to see it in action.

Hi Tom, thanks for looking into this and for the detailed questions!

Regarding the second-session possibility, I’m sure I don’t have the file open in another tab or window, in Present/prototype view, or in the Figma Desktop App at the same time.

To answer your questions:

1. Does this happen in specific files, or in any file regardless of type?
I’ve noticed this across different Figma files, so it doesn’t seem to be specific to one particular file.

2. Are you seeing it in the browser or app version — and is the other one open at the same time?
I’ve noticed this behavior in the Figma Desktop App. When it happens, I don’t have the same file open in the browser, another window, or another Figma session at the same time.

3. Does it line up with anything network-related — a Wi-Fi drop or waking the machine from sleep?
I haven’t noticed it being related to a Wi-Fi drop or waking my Mac from sleep. What I have noticed is that it tends to happen while I’m using Figma Agent. I’ve seen the avatar duplication happen multiple times while the Agent is working.

4. If you hover or click the duplicated avatars, do they behave identically, or does one of them do something different?
I haven’t been able to test this properly yet because the duplicated avatars only appear for a few seconds and then disappear on their own.

5. How is this affecting your work?
It’s mainly confusing because seeing multiple copies of my own avatar makes it look as though there are multiple sessions or instances of me in the file, even though I only have one session open.

I’ve attached a screen recording showing an example. Please check around 1:29 — you can see my avatar suddenly duplicate until there are three copies visible at the same time, and then the extra avatars disappear on their own a few seconds later.

In this example, I was using Figma Agent when it happened. I’ve noticed this behavior more than once while the Agent is working.

Hope the recording helps narrow down what might be causing it. Thanks again for looking into it!

The Figma agent detail is the useful one. I've passed the recording and your notes to the team that looks after this so they can confirm whether that's what's happening here.

One more question to be sure: Does this only happen while Figma agent is actively working, or have you also seen it when open but idle?

From what I gather, it’s looking like what you’re seeing is limited to a display issue, but we certainly want to get ahead of it. Please let me know if anything else comes up, and I'll follow up here as I learn more.

Yes, I’ve also noticed it more than once when I wasn’t using the Figma agent. The file was idle, and my avatar duplicated in the same way as in the recording. I haven’t been able to capture a video of it happening in that situation yet because it’s intermittent—it might happen just once during several hours of work.

When I’m using the agent, the duplication is much more noticeable and happens consistently, especially when I attach a file to the agent.
