Missing "Apply variable" icon (represented by a variable symbol) next to the text content field.

Has anyone found this icon? It used to exist in older versions of figma—figma even shows and talks about it in their documentation, BUT it seems like there’s been an update and it’s moved/buried somewhere.

I can apply variables to colors under libraries to choose the variable color. However to apply numbers (like 500) or strings (like unique text phrase for header for eg), they are setup as variable but there is NO icon in appearance or typography section in my design panel. There are variable referenced in type settings but that seems to change the weight/height things. I’m trying to set number values and set text phrases.

I’m completely lost/stuck. Thank you!

2 hours later, 😤, I’ve found it. For any other poor souls, see screenshot. The “apply variables” icon was moved to the near top of the design panel, you’ll see the hexigon shape with the gray hover state here:
