Robin Clark

I tried to use MCP to access a Figma node. I authenticated but I get the error:

This figma file could not be accessed. IMPORTANT: YOU MUST READ THE MCP RESOURCE TO DEBUG THE ISSUE.
  Figma Debug UUID: af09740d-d0f8-40be-b7e5-45fbe75061a9

  Authenticated MCP user:

email: [redacted PII - DJV 3/11/26]
  handle: Robin Clark
  plan: Robin Clark's team
  seat: Full
  tier: starter

I can see and browse the node in the browser. I can’t see that I have run out of tool calls because this has never worked

Hi @Robin Clark, thanks for reaching out and apologies for the delayed reply!

Are you still having trouble with this? If so, please note that you can only access Figma content that you already have permission to view or edit. Since you received an error indicating that the file can’t be accessed:

  1. Check the file link: Make sure it’s a valid Figma Design, FigJam, or Figma Make file.
  2. Verify your user: Run the whoami tool to confirm the email used for authentication. It also tells you all the plans the user belongs to and their seat types in these plans.
  3. Confirm permissions: Ensure the user belongs to the plan to which the file being accessed belongs to as well

To address your other concern, on a Starter plan, you can make up to 6 tool calls per month. More information available here: https://developers.figma.com/docs/figma-mcp-server/plans-access-and-permissions/

I can see the figma design in the browser so presumably have access. The whoami tool reports that it is my username (the one I login to figma with and can see the design). Presumably if I can view the design in the browser then the mcp client should be able access that same design after I have authenticated it?

Hey @Robin Clark, thanks for following up!

That does sounds correct. Are you able to share a URL link to the file?

We can double check the file permissions on the backend as well as connect you with our technical quality team directly, if needed.

Here is a link to a page of a figma design that I can see in my browser:

I tried again just now in codex “can you use the mcp to read the figma design at https://www.figma.com/design/wVo1HvDXk13jWIlyQ4CZHl/Flood-Assist-
Front-Page?node-id=1-2&t=bOP1JKpIle03PNxZ-4” and here is the result:

I tried via Figma MCP, but this environment cannot access that file.

The authenticated Figma account is [redacted PII - 3/16/26 DJV] (Robin Clark), on Robin Clark's team with a Full seat on
the Starter tier. MCP returned a file access/permissions error for file key wVo1HvDXk13jWIlyQ4CZHl, so the likely
issue is that this account does not currently have permission to that Figma file or workspace.

Thanks for the link, @Robin Clark

I took a look at the file on the backend, and you are not on the plan or team where this file is being accessed from. While this file may have can view access for all users who have the link, as noted in step 3 to confirm permissions, you must belong to the plan where the file being accessed belongs to as well. Hope this helps clarify!

I'm struggling a bit to understand this plan/team thing, but if I “duplicate it to my drafts” will it be on my plan (whatever that is) so I can access it via MCP?

Hi @Robin Clark

To help clarify, the owner of this particular file link, would have to add you to their team or plan in order for you to access it via MCP.

But if you have the ability to duplicate the file with your current access to your drafts of your own team, then yes - you should be able to access it as expected.
