I understand the confusion here, so I’d be happy to help clarify.  We recently simplified the MCP section in Dev Mode to lead with the remote MCP server, so "Enable desktop MCP server" was replaced by "Connect to AI agent." That rolled out at the end of July, so what you're seeing is expected. Please know that the remote server works on all seats and plans and is the one we recommend, since it has the broadest feature set. Setup guide →


Two quick questions: Is there something specific you need the desktop server for or were you following a guide that mentioned it? And which MCP client are you using (VS Code, Cursor, Claude Code)?

On Education specifically, the desktop server requires a Dev or Full seat on a paid plan. Hope this helps explain!

Hi, experiencing the same issue. My answer for your question: I’m just gonna replace a new font that is stored in my local computer, which cannot be accomplished using only remote server. I’m using Codex desktop.

I am also facing the same issue. I am using openwork (a “Claude Cowork”-alike GUI) with opencode under the hood. In the current version, this setup is not supported by the Figma remote MCP. Unfortunately, I cannot activate the local MCP to interact with Figma.

Thanks for your reply, ​@Max Alexej Pötter and for explaining your setup - I can see why you’re looking for the local option at the moment.

 

With a Figma Design file open in the desktop app:

1. Open Quick Actions with ⌘/ on macOS or Ctrl+/ on Windows.
2. Search for Enable desktop MCP server and select it.
3. Configure your client to connect to http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp, keeping Figma open.

 

As ​@djv mentioned above, the desktop server requires an eligible Dev or Full seat (just a reminder for you or anyone else).

 

Have you seen the recent updates to the list of supported clients in our MCP catalog? OpenCode has now been added, though I don’t know whether that covers the version bundled with OpenWork specifically. Worth a shot before falling back to the desktop server. Let me know if you have any trouble!
