Issue with access to a project

Hi,

I’m experiencing a recurring issue with access to a Figma board I’ve been invited to collaborate on.

At one point, I had full access — I was able to view and edit the board without any problems. However, when I tried to open the same link again today, I received the following message:

“Looks like this file is restricted. To access it, you need to join the X organisation first. Ask to be added.”

The confusing part is that I had already requested access previously and was granted it, as I was able to edit the file. I’m not sure why access is now restricted again.

Could you help clarify what might be causing this and how to resolve it?

Thank you in advance.

Hi @Clara Richard,

I understand you're seeing a "Looks like this file is restricted" message when trying to open a file that you previously had edit access to.

Based on what I can see on our end, it looks like you're currently a guest on an organization with a free view seat. While you were able to edit the file before, it appears your seat may need to be upgraded to a paid seat, which would require approval from the organization's admin.

For more context on how guest access works, this guide may be helpful: Restrict or prevent guest access

If you'd like our team to investigate this further, we're unfortunately unable to look into individual account details directly in the Forum for privacy and security reasons. I'd recommend submitting a support request:

  1. Go to the Support Hub
  2. Click Start a chat and type "Support request"
  3. In the form, please include:
    • The direct URL to the file you're trying to open
    • A screenshot of the full Figma screen showing the error message

This will help our team investigate more effectively.

Thanks!
