Improve FigJam to Figma Design conversion fidelity (gradients, effects, connectors

Hi Figma team,

Every time I convert a FigJam file into Figma Design, the objects look right and lose whatever made them useful in FigJam.

Gradients are the clearest example. They come through visually fine. I can't touch them afterward: no stops, no direction, nothing to edit. Effects like shadows and blur do the same thing. They render, then freeze.

I want converted objects to behave like native Figma Design objects. Editable gradients and effects. Objects I can still move, scale, rotate. Connectors that keep their routing and arrows and stay attached when I drag things around. Groups and components that don't strip out the interactive parts living inside them.

This matters for the work I do: educational diagrams and mind maps, usually packed with connected objects, nested groups, components, gradients. I build the structure and relationships in FigJam. I polish the visuals in Figma Design. Moving a diagram from one to the other means rebuilding half the connections by hand, every time.

I want the conversion to work like a translation between the two file types. Right now it works like an export.

Are you working on this? Or is there a technical reason these properties can't carry over?

I understand how this must be disrupting your workflow. Please know that there isn't an easy conversion between the two file types. FigJam and Figma Design were built as separate formats, so content moves between them by copy and paste rather than a real translation step, which is exactly why it behaves like the export you're describing.

Connectors in particular are FigJam-native and have no equivalent object in Design, so they can't stay attached once they land there. Work between Figma and FigJam covers what does and doesn't carry over. The gradients and effects piece is the part I'd like to dig into, because that one I'd expect to behave better than you're seeing. A few questions:

  • How are you moving the content? Copy/paste or something else?
  • Are the gradients ones you created in FigJam, or pasted in from elsewhere?
  • When you select a pasted object in Design, what do you see in the Fill row? A gradient swatch, an image fill, or something else?

As for your last question, I can't speak to a specific roadmap or timeline, but this is exactly the kind of workflow detail the FigJam team wants to hear about. With your additional context, we'll make sure this get passed onto them.
