How can I remove the highlight on an object while I style it?

This didn’t happen before. I noticed today when I click on an object to add effects, the selection outline is in the way and I can’t see what I am doing properly.

For example, applying a 1px inner shadow, or a slight drop shadow. I can’t see what I am doing now because the selection outline obfuscates everything.

Is there a way to toggle this on and off, or have it like it was before?
