Highlights appear while editing slides, but not in presentation

I’ve been following the fantastic insutructions here to create highlighted text for my slides. I would create them in figma then copy them into my slide. While editing the highlights appear correctly, but when presenting the effect is completely gone.

Anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it?
