Help transferring ownership for locked education team

Hi, I am the owner of an Education verified team. I recently graduated but I forgot to transfer ownership of our Figma team to the new leadership before I graduated. The team has now just been locked because we didn’t reverify our education plan. But there’s no way for me to fix this:

  • I can’t re-verify myself because I’ve graduated
  • I can’t transfer ownership to the new leadership who are able to verify because every time I try to transfer ownership I get a pop up saying that I can’t take any action on my locked team

I would rather they not have to make a new team and transfer everything. Can I please get help with transferring ownership for my locked team?

Since your team is locked, only Figma support can transfer ownership in this case. I’d suggest contacting Figma’s help center directly and explaining that you’ve graduated and can’t reverify. They can usually unlock the team or assign ownership to the new verified member.

I understand you’re looking for a way to transfer ownership of your locked Education team.

 

In this case, I’d first recommend unlocking your team before transferring ownership.

To clarify, once your student status expires, your Education team is automatically downgraded to a free Starter team. If your team has four or more files, the team becomes locked.

 

To unlock it, please reduce your file count to three or fewer by moving files back to your Drafts or deleting unnecessary files.

For detailed instructions, please check the “My team was downgraded and locked. How can I unlock it?” section under Troubleshooting verification in the Figma for Education article.

 

Once your team is unlocked, try transferring ownership of the file, project, or team. You can find more details here:

I did that and they redirected me here since I’m on a free or education plan :(

I would really like to not do this because there are lots of files and, if I understand correctly all comments etc would be lost.

The team is able to reverify, I just need the ownership to be transferred to the person who should actually own the team now. I would really appreciate a way to get in touch with Figma’s support; I emailed them about this but was told I can only receive help via the forums.

I understand that you’d like to transfer ownership of your locked team without unlocking it first.

Regarding comments — it seems there are no such limitations on the Starter plan, so there’s no need to worry about that. You can find more details here: Starter plan overview
