Guests can't edit FigJam despite "open session"

My colleagues and I use FigJam for team sessions and until recently, that worked perfectly. Only our designer and I have paid Figma accounts because we’re the only ones heavily using the tools. Luckily we can use the “open session” feature for those team sessions. However, since a few weeks, my colleagues are no longer able to collaborate in the file, despite having started the open session.

Is this an issue or is Figma limiting collaboration options for non-paying users (“nudging” them to pay)?

Thanks,
Job

Hi Job, thanks for sharing this! I can see why it’s confusing, especially if your team sessions used to work smoothly.

To clarify, Figma hasn’t introduced any new limitations on FigJam collaboration for non-paying users through ‘Open Sessions’. Nothing has changed on the billing side either. Visitors joining an open session do not count as billable seats, and you won’t be charged for them. More information in our guide: Invite visitors to an open session.

Based on what you described, the most likely explanation is that the open session had expired. Open sessions last 24 hours, and once the session ends:

  • They can still open and view the file, but can’t edit the file unless a new open session is started.

Still, if your colleagues lose edit access even within an active open session, that’s unexpected. Feel free to reach out directly to our support for further investigation. You can do it within FigJam by selecting the question mark icon in the bottom-right corner of any page and selecting Contact support.
