Figma Slots - Makes selecting layers more difficult and unintuitive (Bug?)

Hello! I have been trying to be a big advocate for Slots at our organization, and I have been enjoying the flexibility they bring. That said, there are some interaction aspects of Slots that are making the overall experience of using Figma worse. These seem like a Bug.

The one I want to point out there is “selecting other elements becomes harder when a Slot is in place”. When trying to select layers on a totally different frame or section, if there is a Slot in a component “under” those layers on a different frame, dragging a box out selects both groups of items, which doesn’t make any sense to me.

If you take that same scenario and detach the component, the problem no longer exists. This seems like an inconsistency with how Slots are architected in Figma, or something. Really frustrating!

The recording below perfectly demonstrates this issue.

Hi @Smith_Samuel_D, Celyn from Figma Community Support here.

Thanks so much for sharing this - and for championing Slots internally, that really means a lot. Really appreciate you taking the time to record and walk through it too.

The example you described, especially comparing it with what happens after detaching the component, is super helpful in understanding what you’re seeing here.

I can see what you mean about the selection behavior feeling inconsistent here, especially with elements across separate frames being picked up when a Slot is involved. I’m going to share this with the team so they can take a closer look.

In the meantime, just to help with the investigation, could you share a bit more about your setup?

  • Are the frames overlapping at all, or fully separate on the canvas?
  • Does this happen consistently across files, or only in specific ones?
  • If possible, please share a direct link to the impacted file here, and invite support-share@figma.com with “Can View” access (this will not impact your billing and will allow us to reproduce the issue and investigate with Engineering)

Thanks again for raising this, keen to get a better understanding of what you’re seeing here.

Hi @Celyn_L, thanks so much for the quick response!

Attached is a video of me re-demonstrating the issue in the main file, and then recreating the behavior in a brand new file. I did find a nuance while doing this demo -- the selection issue only happens if there is a Slot directly below the selection area. At first I thought it was if any Slot content (rectangles in the video) was below the selection area. This might explain why it hasn’t been more heavily reported.

Here is the link to that new test file where I recreated the issue: Link to File, and I have shared it with Edit access for the Figma Support team email.

To be clear on the behavior I would expect: I would not want the content to be selected if I cannot see it on the canvas (it is being clipped by the outermost frame). Additionally, and sort of separately, if my selection box is only within the bound of a Section, I would expect it to only select content within that Section.

Please let me know if there are any other ways I can help!

I’ve passed everything along to the team for a closer look and I’ll update you here as soon as I hear back with any next steps or updates.

Appreciate you digging into this and sharing those additional details 🙌
