Figma make Show Version History is greyed out

I am in a subscription on Figma make. I notice I can no longer see the save button on the left side by the AI chat window which also showed the files you amended. It usually list the amended files and an undo button to cancel all the changes in that file. Also in the top menu its greyed out. What’s going on? Screenshot attached

@Gee , our Support team has replied directly through your support ticket regarding the issue you reported with Manual Edits in Figma Make. I’m also sharing the update here for others experiencing the same issue.

The good news is that the new experience for saving Manual Edits as versions is expected to roll out next week. (Supporting broader codebase and Git workflows required us to move this functionality into the upcoming feature. We apologize for the inconvenience here.)

In the meantime, your Manual Edits are still saved automatically, even when they don’t create a separate version for them. This means:

Your manual edits are preserved even if you refresh the page or return to the file later.
While these edits may not appear as a separate version, the changes themselves are still saved.
If you restore an older version, Figma will automatically save a new version containing your latest manual changes before the restoration. This version will then be available in the version dropdown menu at the top of the chat panel.

I hope this clarifies how Manual Edits are currently saved. Thank you for bearing with us while the new experience rolls out!

Hi @Gee, thanks for reaching out!

I understand the confusion here. Figma Make’s version history is different from where the typical “Show version history” options appear in the Main Menu, as shown in your screenshot. You can access your versions by clicking the down caret at the top of the Make file. A tooltip for “Version history” will appear when you hover over it.

Here’s an example using my own Make file:

Since you also mentioned that controls beside your AI chat have also disappeared, could you confirm if you’re using the latest version of Figma Make? Is this happening in just this file or across all your Make files?

This information will help us better determine what may be happening here.

Thanks so much for replying @djv . So let me clarify further. I do have the Version history drop down at the top. (image attached) But that seems to only log when I use the AI chat e.g move section under facilities. and it performs an action then it will show on the version history. However when I manually make a change there is no record. Like you have on the left side (Edited 1 file +5 -5). I used to see that along side a save button but no more. Its blank. Image attached. I am using the online web version.
I have lost some work as a result of that. Its across all Figma make files.

Thanks for clarifying, @Gee!

It’s terrible to hear that you’ve lost work. The previous “Edited 1 file” card has changed, but manual edits should still show a changes control that lets you review and save them as a restore point. Seeing that area completely blank across all your Make files isn’t expected.

I’ve created ticket #2151648 on your behalf to connect you with our Technical Quality team. If you could send over one affected file URL and share the file with support-share@figma.com using Can view access, our team can investigate the missing save control.

In the meantime, I recommend using the AI chat for any edits that need a version checkpoint, since those changes are appearing correctly in your version history.

I posted a related issue, where I have no access to version control if I make manual edits. Having an AI only expectation of versioning (if that was the intent) takes away control from the user entirely.

I also think this is a severe user experience issue. This worked perfectly a week ago. Now most of my changes, even asking the chat to make changes, don’t show up with the card for versions/revert. As you can see in this image, I have 2 versions possible even though what you don’t see is the many, many chages I made. Yesterday I worked for about 2+ hours on something, then it had an issue. That’s when I realized it hadn’t been saving the versions. It had just worked so well for a few weeks that I wasn’t expecting it not to. I was getting a dark grey screen and had it check everything about 10 times. It asked to see a screencapture of the console, etc. Kept telling me everything was fine. Then finally I just said “change the app color” and it responded with this:
“I found the real cause: the project files had been reset to the original empty app, which is why the canvas went blank. I restored the complete flowchart and applied a new plum, rose, and terracotta palette.”
So somehow it wasn’t finding that everything was messed up until I tried to make a change.
Thats when it created the second version.
The first version in the image is just a random spot half way through my work. I had done many prompts and it happened to create a version in the middle randomly.

Losing hours of work after version checkpoints appeared to be saving normally is understandably concerning. We’re investigating similar reports where versions aren’t being created consistently for both manual edits and AI-requested changes. The file resetting to an empty app may be related, but we’ll need to investigate the affected file to confirm.

Could you each share one affected file with support-share@figma.com using Can view access, then send me the file URL and the approximate date and time the versions stopped appearing? With your file URLs, I’ll create tickets to connect you with our technical quality team to investigate further.

For now, I recommend duplicating the file before making additional significant changes, so you have a separate backup.

I sent an email to that address because I can’t share our files. But I got this in return:

“We're writing to let you know that the group you tried to contact (support-share) may not exist, or you may not have permission to post messages to the group. A few more details on why you weren't able to post:

* You might have spelled or formatted the group name incorrectly.
* The owner of the group may have removed this group.
* You may need to join the group before receiving permission to post.
* This group may not be open to posting.”

Is there somewhere else I can send the email? I explained the issue with screenshots.

Hey @Tony Moore - I wanted to hop in and clear up the confusion on this one. That specific alias, support-share@figma.com, is explicitly for file-sharing to our support team only. That address does not accept emails (they will bounce back).

In a later reply, you mentioned you were using Figma Gov -- can you confirm the email address your Figma account is registered under? It looks like the one in your profile may be a personal one, so I want to verify if it was the right one to contact you with. I’ll be taking over for @djv. Thanks!

It looks like this may be related to a recent change or issue with Figma Make. The normal file version history works differently in Make, and Figma’s support team has confirmed that the missing manual-change control isn’t expected. Hopefully they can restore it soon.

I can’t share as I’m using Figma Gov, but this is the issue I am having which I think is contributing to the problem of not having restore points.
I had the issue where the screen is showing up blank and asked Make why that was happening:

“The workspace itself was reset outside the edits I made.

Evidence: when I checked, both src/App.tsx and src/index.css had reverted exactly to the original starter files, the Git working tree was clean, and Git’s reflog showed a reset back to the initial bootstrap commit. That means the changes weren’t merely hidden by the preview—they were removed from the filesystem.

This can happen if the Make project is re-synced, reset, or reopened from its base revision. I’ve restored the site now, but the safest next step is to make sure the project is saved/committed through your environment so it has a durable revision.”

Our Engineering team has identified a separate bug where versions may fail to save after agent responses and has filed a report to investigate the behavior you described. This is separate from the missing Manual Edits card discussed above.

For your case, please contact our dedicated Government Support team at support-figgov@figma.com, ideally from the email associated with your Figma for Government account. Include a link to this thread and mention both the missing versions and blank preview. Please avoid including sensitive information; the team can advise on the appropriate diagnostic details.

Once you’ve reached out, please send me directly a DM with the email address you used so I can add a follow-up note to your support ticket to increase its visibility.

They seriously need to fix this, my team and I couldn’t see todays changes seperated. The most recent change on the version history claimed it happened on Sept 27, but we made a bunch of changes today. I don’t know who thought that this was going to be a good idea to remove the version history that everyone liked. No one asked for this change...

I don’t know how Figma asking for file access will help. Literally ANY file - it does not have access to manually controlled version history anymore. If I create a new file, or edit an existing one, the same issue appears. And I just updated the Mac app with latest release, tested in the browser, etc. and still no manual tracking. I’m not using 75 credits for AI to name a title from “Home” to “Home Page”, or when I want to manually add information to a markdown instructions file.
