Figma Make Project Stuck in Kit Mode and Data Loss after accidental click

That sounds incredibly frustrating especially if the original Make project contains important work. If Version History is also being rendered through Kit mode it sounds like the problem is deeper than simply reverting the latest change.

I would avoid making any further edits or publishing the kit for now just in case it creates another state that makes recovery harder. I’d also contact Figma support and specifically explain that Create a new kit switched the existing Make project into Kit mode and that Version History previews are also forced into Kit mode. Ask them to restore the file to the version immediately before that action from their backend if possible.

If anyone else has encountered this exact behavior it would also be useful to know whether there is a way to force the Make editor to load independently of the Kit interface. Hopefully Figma can recover the previous state without requiring you to rebuild the project from scratch.

This was a brand new file that you chose the Create a Kit option, right? You can only create a kit from a brand new file, and once you’ve done that it isn’t possible to convert it to something else (after your initial prompt, the option will no longer show in your file settings). You could use your kit with a new Make file so any work you made there is available for a regular Make file. To do this, open a new Make file, then in the prompter click Select a Make kit. Choose your kit from the list, then prompt Make to build from that. 

Let me know if you saw something different from this and we’ll go from there. Also, ​@anniewarner is correct if you somehow did convert an existing Make project into a kit - we’ll need to take that to our Technical Quality team for investigation.

In other words, after clicking "Create New Kit" in the settings icon at the top right (just like I did), is it impossible or very difficult to recover the project?

Right, you can convert to a kit but not back, which is why we only present the option with a brand new Make file so you don’t accidentally convert an existing project. Did you try using your Make kit with a new Make file? That should let you bring all the work you have in you kit into a regular Make project where you can use it to build out your app. You can ask Make to specifically use components and styles from the kit in the app. Let me know if you see something weird or have trouble doing that, though!
