Figma Lost Account Recovery

Hi,

I had two figma accounts, one personal and one university email. Since I didn’t need the personal one, I transferred ownership of an assignment file to my university account, and then deleted the personal account. However, for some reason, the file didn’t transfer over, and was deleted with my personal account.

Is there any way I can recover my account so that I can regain access to my assignment file? It was deleted around 20 minutes ago, so fairly recently. If there is any way I can provide more information privately, please let me know and I will be happy to do so.

Thank you.

Hey @alonske1, thanks for reaching out!

Deleting a Figma account is a permanent action and can’t be reversed. Once an account is deleted, it can’t be restored or logged back into.

What happens to content depends on where the file lived:

If you delete your account before transferring ownership:

  • Teams you own (Starter or Professional):
If you were the only member, the team is deleted.
If there were other members, ownership is automatically reassigned (first to another admin, then to a member with edit access to the team, then to a member with view access).

  • Files you own in teams or projects:
The file becomes ownerless. Ownerless files can’t be claimed, but they’re still accessible to anyone who already had access to the file. If the file only had “can view” access, team admins can join with edit access and grant access to others.

If the file was in a team that got deleted (for example, if you were the only member), unfortunately the files in that team would have been deleted along with it.
You can find more info in our Help Center article: https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039826814-Delete-your-Figma-account

If you’re comfortable sharing the file link (you can DM it if you’d prefer), I’m happy to double-check whether it might still exist in an ownerless state or under a reassigned team.

Thank you,

Gayani

Thank you for the swift reply. Between the two cases you mentioned, I honestly don’t know which one this falls into, as I transferred ownership to my existing school account but still can’t access it.

Here is the assignment link: on my end it shows a 404 error message, saying I can only embed valid links, so I will try to post as a screenshot. Hopefully you are able to copy the text.

Hi, just wanted to provide an update here. I was able to recreate my assignment design from memory without too much trouble, so I no longer require the deleted file. Thank you for your support!

Hey @alonske1, thanks for the update, and I’m really glad to hear you were able to recreate your assignment without too much trouble!

I did take a closer look at the original file link as well, just so you have clarity for the future. It appears the team where the file was stored (A. L. team) was deleted on March 3, 2026. When a team is deleted, all files and projects within that team are removed for members.

The good news is that a deleted team can be restored within 28 days by the team owner or an admin. After that window, the files are permanently deleted.

You can find more details on how restoration works and who can do it here: https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039965973-Restore-a-deleted-team

Even though you no longer need the file, I hope this helps prevent any future surprises.
