Figma is slow and freezing when multiple people on file

Hi everyone,

We’re running into serious performance issues on one of our Figma files and I’m curious if others have experienced something similar.

As soon as 2 or more people are working in the file at the same time, performance drops dramatically. Everything becomes extremely laggy — selecting layers, moving elements, typing, navigating… it all slows down to the point where it’s barely usable.

What’s confusing is that the file itself doesn’t seem particularly heavy:

  • Memory usage is around 6%
  • No massive image assets or obvious performance killers
  • The structure is relatively clean and organized

Despite that, real-time collaboration is basically impossible for us right now. We’ve had to split work into separate files just to stay productive, which obviously isn’t ideal.

We’re trying to understand:

  • Is there a known issue with multiplayer performance under certain conditions?
  • Are there specific things (even non-obvious ones) that can cause this kind of lag?
  • Any debugging tips or tools we could use to identify the root cause? I tried to use the console to monitor errors but nothing obvious pop to my eyes

Would really appreciate any insights or similar experiences 🙏

My Figma is running on a MacBook Pro M4 and my colleagues are on Premium Gaming laptop. We are all experiencing the same lag on the file.

Hi @NicolasC , Celyn from Figma Community Support here.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share all of this in detail, I’m really sorry this is slowing your team down.

It’s also really helpful to know that this is happening across different devices (your MacBook Pro M4 and your teammates’ high-spec machines). Along with the low memory usage and clean file structure you mentioned, that helps us rule out a few common causes.

In the meantime, I’ve gone ahead and created a support ticket so the team can take a closer look - your case number is #1873310.

While we investigate, here are a few things that might help narrow this down or improve performance in the interim:

  • Try switching between the desktop app and browser to see if the behavior changes
  • Restart the app or refresh the browser
  • Toggle off multiplayer cursors, layout guides, or effects temporarily
  • Check your network stability, especially with multiple collaborators in the file
  • If you’re using a VPN or any browser extensions, try disabling them to see if that improves things

You can also take a look at this troubleshooting guide for additional checks:
Troubleshooting checklist

If you’re able to, it would be really helpful if you could reply directly to the ticket with:

  • A direct link to the impacted file, and invite support-share@figma.com with “Can View” access (this will not impact your billing and will allow us to reproduce the issue and investigate with Engineering).
  • A short screen recording showing the lag when multiple users are present (if possible)
  • Any additional context that might help us reproduce this on our end

Really appreciate you flagging this, someone will be in touch shortly with next steps 🙏
