Exporting transparent pngs

It seems overly difficult to export transparent png’s. Despite advice on making sure frame and background fills are hidden or removed entirely, I’m still getting grey backgrounds. Sometimes grouping elements together and exporting only those groups work - but my naming conventions get out of whack. Please make it easier to control transparencies on frames or export settings.

The trouble seems to be with masks, or any effects. Please make it so what you see, is what you export.

Hey Todd! Transparent PNG exports can be tricky in Figma but there are a few things worth checking.

First, make sure the frame itself has no fill applied — not just hidden, but fully removed. A hidden fill can still sometimes affect exports depending on your Figma version. Also check if "Clip content" is on for the frame, as that can occasionally introduce background artifacts.

Second, in the export settings, confirm you're exporting as PNG (not PNG with background color selected). If you're on a page with a canvas background color set, that won't affect the export itself, but it's easy to confuse visually.

If grouping works for you but breaks your naming conventions, one clean workaround is to use a Section or wrap elements in a Frame with no fill, name it properly, and export directly from there. Keeps your structure intact.

For persistent issues or if this seems like a bug on Figma's end, it's worth opening a support ticket here: https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/requests/new — include screenshots of your layer panel and export settings so they can diagnose it faster.

Also — if you ever want hands-on help with exports, file organisation, or any design work in Figma, feel free to reach out to me directly at [Redacted by moderator - 2026-05-16]. I work as a Figma virtual assistant and can help you get things set up cleanly so issues like this don't keep coming up.

Hope that helps!
