Question

Export no longer remembers folder choice

Until recently, using the “Export” function in the sidebar opened up a window that showed the last folder used for export. This was quite useful as it allowed for multiple exports to occur into the same folder without needing to dig for the folder each time.

As of last week though, using the “Export” function always defaults the save folder to the Downloads directory instead of the last used export directory.

I can understand defaulting to a directory in lieu of a preference, but can a preference be set within Figma to either default to the last used or default to a specific directory? My workflow benefits greatly from doing multiple exports to a unique directory and this new change has slowed things down quite a bit.

Thanks!

Hey hey @heyhankhowsthebank 🤩 Thank you very much. One question — are you using the Desktop app? Or is this happening in both the Desktop app and in the browser? Thanks! — Jaycee

Hey Jacyee! Yes I’m using the desktop app. I have it set to forward all web activity to the desktop app, so I don’t have an easy way to test if it happens in the web app.

It seems to only default to the Downloads directory if I select multiple items to export. Exporting a single item seems to remember the previously-used directory.

@Jaycee Lewis I'm having the same issue on the macOS desktop app. Is there any update on when this will be fixed?

I’d first check whether this is happening only in the Figma desktop app or also in the browser, since the behavior could be tied to the native file-save dialog rather than Figma’s export settings.

If it happens in both, I’d check whether the recent update changed the export workflow or removed the last-used-folder preference. If it’s desktop-only, testing after restarting Figma or resetting the app’s local state could help determine whether the saved folder preference is being lost.

I don’t run into this issue with saving anything else from any other application, so I would be surprised if the problem came from the native file-save dialog. As mentioned, I export from Figma all the time and this only recently started occurring.

I’ve restarted Figma, my computer, and looked for any folder save preferences within Figma, finding none. I don’t know that I have any permissions within my company to reset the app’s local state, though.

It does not occur within the web app, which utilizes the browser’s file-save preferences.

I’m having the same issue on the desktop app. Restarted it + confirmed on the most up to date version.

I can confirm that desktop now always defaults to downloads folder. Would be great if this was an option you could change. From the browser it just downloads the files like anything else you download through the browser.

Same issue on desktop app. Thought it was just the one design page or maybe something on my end, but keeps happening on all of my work now, after the previous update.

I can confirm the same on desktop app. It’s really enoying.
By the way, in web app it reminds the last folder I was exporting to but exports all images into a zip which is also enoying.

Confirming this is also happening in my desktop app as well. Was hoping the recent update would fix this but it’s still happening and really adding a lot of steps to my workflow.

Confirming this is also happening on my desktop app. This is quite annoying as I have to constantly navigate to the correct folder after each export.
