Question
Education plan: Verified team members see "You can only view and comment" on files created by others, despite "can edit" at team/folder/file level. Expected behavior?
Hi
I'd like to check whether the following behavior is expected on an Education plan team.
Setup
- Our organization is a bootcamp and has been verified for the Education plan.
- We have a team on the Education plan. All accounts/members show "Verified" under Education status in the People tab, and there are 0 unverified users.
- Inside the team, I created a folder and put files in it (both Figma Design and FigJam files).
- The team has "can edit" access to the team and folder ("Anyone in [team name] can edit").
- On the file's Share dialog, the team also shows "can edit".
What I expected
Since edit permission is set at the team, folder, and file level, and every member is verified, I expected any member to be able to directly edit a file created by someone else and edit it right away.
What actually happens
- When a member (not the file creator) opens the file that others created, a banner says "You can only view and comment on this file." with a "Start editing" button.
- The members are signed in with the correct account (our organization's email) and have selected the correct team.
- After clicking "Start editing", a "Continue editing" confirmation appears, and only after confirming can they edit.
- The file creator doesn't see this banner and can edit immediately.
What I've already checked
- Education status is Verified for all members, so this isn't a verification expiry issue.
- Permissions at team, folder, and file level are all "can edit" (screenshots attached).
- Because it's an Education plan, there is no seat management for admins, so I can't check or change seat types.
Questions
- Is it expected that members must go through "Start editing" / "Continue editing" on files created by others, even though they already have "can edit" access and are verified?
- If this is expected, is there a way to have members open the file in edit mode by default, without the extra step?
- If it isn't expected, is there a setting I should check?
Thanks in advance. I'm happy to share more details if needed.
Toku :)
