Question

Draggable connectors aren't working in prototype mode

Instances cannot be dragged, normal elements work like i show using the text field. However Instances needs to be manually inputted through the inspector panel to the right. Very frustrating.

Attachment is a recording showing the bug.

Tried restarting, updating. Nothing works, this started happening around Juli/August.

Hey @Simon Kidane, welcome to Figma Forum.

Appreciate you taking the time to troubleshoot and provide this recording — and sorry for the disruption this has caused.

I looked into it and this matches a bug our engineering team recently identified. The good news is there’s a temporary solution that you can use today.

Here's what's going on. When an instance already has an interaction with an empty destination, dragging a connector is making Figma try to repair that interaction instead of creating a new one. In your recording I can see a Hover → Change to with no destination set, which lines up with similar reports.

To move forward, try this:

  1. Select the instance and open the Prototype tab.
  2. Find the Hover interaction with the empty destination. If it's listed under Interactions, you can fix it right there.
  3. Either delete that interaction or point it at a valid destination.
  4. Drag your connector again — it should stick this time.

Please let me know if this clears it up on your end (for now). Either way, we’ll keep watch for updates on a resolution to this issue so you're covered when the fix ships. 🙏🏻

Hey Tom appreciate you reaching out.

The hover interaction isn’t an empty one. It comes from the component variant for hovering between states, same for pressed since we have a pressed state. These interactions come with every instance, they have always been there and never caused an issue before. The action is “Change to”

But yes, deleting those Variant interactions fixes the “dragging connectors” bug. Is this the way forward until the bug is fixed?

Ah, got it — I misread that. Thanks for setting me straight, @Simon Kidane, and yes, deleting those variant interactions is the solution for now.

I'd like to raise the file where this is happening with our team internally, so we can work out whether it's the same root cause. I just sent you an email with instructions for sharing it securely with our Technical Quality team — when you have a moment, look out for a message from me under case number: 2149679.

With that, we can make sure this doesn't slip through. Thanks again for taking the time to report it, and for keeping us posted.
