I need help with my Figma MCP quota when using Figma through ChatGPT/GPT.
I activated the Education plan, and the in-app plan screen indicates that Education includes up to 200 MCP tool calls per day. However, when I use the Figma integration inside ChatGPT, GPT is immediately blocked from creating or editing a Figma design file.
The error returned is:
You've reached the Figma MCP tool call limit on the Education plan. Upgrade your plan for more tool calls.
This happens even after disconnecting and reconnecting the Figma integration in ChatGPT. ChatGPT/GPT can see that the team is now tier: student, but Figma MCP write calls are still blocked as if the quota is exhausted or not properly active.
Can you please check whether my Education MCP quota is correctly active for this team/account and whether there is a stale Starter-plan quota, cached quota state, or MCP integration issue still being applied to my ChatGPT/Figma connection?
I would also like to know:
How many MCP tool calls per day are included with the Figma Education plan?
When does the daily MCP quota reset?
Do failed, blocked, or rejected MCP calls count against the quota?
Does using Figma through ChatGPT/GPT have a separate MCP quota from using Figma directly?
Why would I receive the quota-limit error immediately after reconnecting, despite being on the Education plan?
Hey, @ttchris! Thanks for your post - I just merged your post into this thread regarding MCP limits and the Education plan. It seems like there’s definitely some confusion here as the MCP rate limits documentation does not mention the Education plan.
To answer your questions and everyone else’s in specific:
We are checking with the team for clarification on this - note that the article linked above does clarify three tools which are exempt from rate limits (add_code_connect_map, generate_figma_design, whoami). It doesn’t address this for the Education plan either, though.
This depends on which limit you hit as there are per-minute, per-day, and pre-month. The MCP can provide messaging here about how long as well as which rate limit you hit.
For failed calls, it’s going to depend on how it fails. If it’s a network issue where the MCP doesn’t actually get the request then it shouldn’t count against the limit. This is also true if you hit a limit and it blocks the request. If the MCP does receive the request and generates an error doing execution (as opposed to an auth error), then it does count against the limit.
The limits should be the same through any supported client, including Codex/ChatGPT.
I suspect this question will be answered once we know what the limits actually are for Education.
Thank you everyone for your patience! Hopefully we should have some clarification on this soon.
The key issue for me is that the error does not seem to match the plan UI.
My Figma plan screen shows Education with “up to 200 MCP tool calls per day.” However, when using the Figma MCP through ChatGPT, I hit this error almost immediately:
You've reached the Figma MCP tool call limit on the Education plan. Upgrade your plan for more tool calls.
This happened after only a small number of MCP calls, including whoami, creating a file, and attempts to run use_figma. I also disconnected and reconnected the Figma integration in ChatGPT, and the issue persisted.
Could the team check the actual rate-limit event for my team/account and confirm:
Which specific limit is being hit — per-minute, per-day, or per-month?
What the actual Education-plan MCP limits are for use_figma calls specifically?
Whether use_figma has a different limit from generate_figma_design, whoami, or other exempt tools?
Whether my account/team may still have a stale Starter-plan quota attached somewhere, even though the plan now shows Education/student?
Whether the error message can expose the specific limit and reset time, since right now it only says I reached “the Figma MCP tool call limit” without saying which one.
My team ID is 1637338965502265007.
The practical problem is that ChatGPT can see the Education/student team, but MCP write calls are blocked before a design board can be generated.
