"Couldn't summarize chat history, try again later" -- anyone know how to resolve this?

Hi everyone - yesterday I ran into a FigmaMake warning when trying to run a prompt telling me "Couldn't summarize chat history, try again later" -- error code: 8cd2987f-7f38-4a23-8dda-797192746e1f -- screenshot below.

For context, this happened to me about an hour after a coworker came to me with the same error. They were able to resolve it by duplicating the FigmaMake file and re-running the prompt, however I have tried everything I can find on the webs (which isn’t much) and a lot of other troubleshooting attempts beyond that to see if I can get past it.

My last ditch attempt was deleting about 200 .md files from the Imports folder that were attachments from many of my prior prompts. That still didn’t do the trick. I’m at a loss.

More context: I’m on version 1248 of the Make file, using the Opus 4.8 model, the prototype is about 18MB with ~600 files.

Any and all help is appreciated!! Thanks all

More context after contacting Figma Support and trying a few more things...

  • Tried to user the clear context feature, got an error saying “No context found”
  • Checked Network Settings, Figma told me everything was connected properly
  • I was using the Figma desktop app when the error first occured, have since tried Edge and Chrome, cleared cache/cookies
  • I’ve tried using the ‘Edit Selection’ prompt option
  • I’ve tried changed my prompt to something very simple
  • I’ve tried changing the model

Still no luck in sending a prompt. Very possible this is a Figma-side issue, just keeping the post updated

Hi.  I’m having the same issue and I’m stuck in a loop.  Did you make any progress?

Hi @stevealmond 👋 Sorry you're hitting this too. Before we assume it's the same root cause, would you mind sharing a couple of details?

  • A screenshot of the exact error text (and the moment it shows up). "Stuck in a loop" plus an error could be a few different things — a chat-history load failure, a generation that keeps retrying, or something else — and the wording on screen tells us which

  • What happens right before it: are you opening an existing Make file and the chat history fails to load, or are you sending a prompt and the generation errors out and retries?

  • Does it happen on one specific file, or across all your Make files?

  • If you're comfortable, opening DevTools → Console on the failing tab and grabbing any red errors when the loop hits would be hugely helpful too

For context on how Make handles generations and credits: https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/articles/33459875669015-How-AI-credits-work

Thanks for flagging — once we can see the error, we'll know more about if it’s the same issue or something separate. — Jaycee

Hi Jaycee,

Thanks for coming back to me.

I managed to resolve the issue by doing a “clear context” in General Settings

Thanks, also, for providing the context around AI credits.  I burnt through the allocated credits with the Professional Plan in half a day and I’m well into using up the top up AI credits that I have purchased separately.

On the evidence of how quickly these credits can be consumed (and on a platform that still contains some bugs - as inevitable as that is) , I’m afraid I won’t be recommending Figma Make to my team.

Thanks again for your support.

Best wishes,

Steve
