Couldn't create new Figma design due to out of memory error and unable to open old designs.

After logging in into Figma, I wanted to open my old design but couldn’t. A notice is shown saying “An error occured while opening the editor”.
 
Creating new Figma design (by clicking the sky blue Design button on top), a notice is shown saying "out of memory".
 
I tried to refresh the webpage and my browser, but the tab just crash. I don’t have other tabs beside Figma itself

After examining further, it wasn’t my extensions that caused this issue. It wasn’t related to performance setting either. I could solve the problem by re-installing the Firefox browser.

Hey ​@Glenn Henry, thanks for reaching out! 

A couple of quick questions and things to try so we can narrow down what's going on:

  1. Are you using Figma in a browser or the desktop app? If it's a browser, which one, and do you have a lot of other tabs or extensions running?
    Out of memory errors are often tied to how much RAM the browser has available, especially if several tabs or memory-heavy extensions are open alongside Figma Design.

  2. Fully quit your browser (not just the Figma tab) or restart the desktop app. Then reopen and try creating a new Figma Design file with nothing else running, no other tabs, apps, or extensions in the background.
    If that works, it tells us the issue is about how much memory was available on your device at the time, not a problem with your account or your files.

  3. For the files that show "An error occurred while opening the editor," could you share one of the file links along with roughly how large or complex the file is (lots of layers, images, or components)? That'll help me figure out if it's a file-specific issue or something broader on your end.

In the meantime, here's our guide on troubleshooting performance issues in Figma Design in case any of those steps help in the meantime.

Once I hear back on those, I can dig in further and loop in the right team if needed.

Thanks for assisting ​@Gayani_S.

  1. I am using Figma in the Firefox browser that I always update to the latest version. There are no other heavy tabs and my extensions are per-usual (they also aren’t active everytime). In fact, I could open Figma with more heavy tabs before.
  2. Unfortunately, I still can’t get around it. I did restarted my browser and even my machine.
  3. I think it happens with every designs. This includes my own design which is relatively light. A public design I couldn’t open is

On the other hand, the exact design can be opened in other browser like the Edge.

I couldn’t open the guide link you attached. Regardless, I think it isn’t a persistent performance issue as I never had these before with the same setup.

Hey ​@Glenn Henry, thanks for looping back and sharing what worked!

Glad a clean reinstall cleared it out. For anyone else landing on this thread with the same issue, if a full browser reinstall feels like a big first step, it's worth trying a hard refresh (clearing cache and cookies for figma.com) before going that route.
