"Copy as PNG” No Longer Works for 4096 x 4096 px Images

Steve Smith

Hi Figma Team,

I’m encountering an issue after a recent update where “Copy as PNG” (Cmd-Shift-C) no longer works for images, frames, or groups up to 4096 x 4096 px—which was previously the maximum import size without resizing.

Before the update, I could copy a selection as a PNG, paste it into Photoshop for edits, and then (ensuring it stayed within the 4096 x 4096 px limit) paste it back into Figma – either replacing the original or as a new variant in an image component.

Now, attempting this results in the attached alert. Was this an intentional change, or is this a bug?

Would appreciate any insights—thanks in advance for looking into it!

Best,
Steve

Hey All, thanks for flagging this and apologies for the delayed reply!

Our team is not currently able to reproduce the issue with very large images. Can either of you share a screen recording or an example file with the image that you’re unable to Copy as PNG?

We’ll be able to pass this onto the team, while they continue to investigate.

There’s a definite issue with the copy function, it is not working correctly inside Figma. If you COPY PNG it will sometimes give an error message. Other times it will copy but if you go to paste into a fill layer, it will remove any other fills when it pastes. In the past you could have multiple fill layers and choose a fill layer to paste into. Seems like the recent update has broken a lot of the paste functionality. Please fix this.

Hi @dvaliao ,

Below is a link to a screen recording of the issue I’m running into – not being able to copy an image as a PNG.

It would seem copy as a PNG should work with image sizes up to the largest image dimensions Figma is capable of importing at, yet it’s not able to work with a 4096x2820 px image in the attached example.

Thanks in advance for looking into it!

Thanks, Steve!

The team has been able to confirm and reproduce this bug, but would love more context:

  1. Which macOS are you using?
  2. Does this also happen for you in the browser? Please note that our supported browsers are Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge.
  3. Are you able to successfully copy frames with minimal elements, but without images at the same dimensions?

With this information, our team will be able to continue their investigation and develop a fix.

Hi @djv

I'm on macOS Sequoia 15.4.1

99% of the time my work in Figma is using the desktop app. I use Firefox Developer Edition and Chrome primarily.

I did some additional testing, copying several items:

- a frame of text: 1976 x 4561
- an image: 4096 x 2730
- an image: 2048 x 1365

For each item I copy/pasted as png on desktop and in the browser, making note of the png size as pasted. The attached png details the results of those tests.

OF NOTE:

I was able to copy the non-image frame of text (minimal elements) successfully on desktop and in browser.

Image copy only worked on the desktop for the smaller image of the test. Not sure what the exact working cutoff is.

Hope that helps. Thanks for following up!
