Components preview in Assets tab not rendering properly

There are multiple components that are not rendering properly in the Assets tab, both in the design system file where the components are hold and in files using this design system. Once copied in the design file, the problematic components are rendered as expected. (see video attached).

The render issue seems a bit random as it’s not always the same components that are rendering incorrectly. Refreshing the file sometime changes the preview of some components, now being correctly or incorrectly rendered. On the design system file, clicking on the component to open the preview popup updates the preview, showing it correctly, but this does not work on a file using this design system. However, in a file using this design system, clicking on a component to open the preview popup, then changing 1 property does render the preview correctly in this popup. All of that is temporarily though, preview issues persisting.

All components shown in the video use variables to tied the colours, fonts, paddings, etc. However, the issue seem to be only on components that have some variable mode options to toggle between, but not all components with variable modes render incorrectly.

Notes:

  • These components where created on a branch of the design system, but are now merged and published
  • The issue occurs in both the desktop app and web browser (Chrome)
  • The issue occurs on both a mac and a PC

Hi, @Frederic_Giroux!

This is pretty weird in how inconsistent it is. Just to make sure I’m understanding, it’s never consistent which components display will display correct versus incorrect, with the only thing you’ve noticed is that they all include variable mode options? In other words, on every load of the file a random assortment of components that have variable mode options will display incorrectly on the assets tab. Is it only random components that were specifically created on the branch?

Could you make a test file and check the assets tab on that file? I just want to verify if it’s something with this particular file or a general issue with any file that uses the library. Thanks!

Hi @adamsmasher

I looked more into it and it seems the components with preview issues are consistent within all files that use the design system. In these files, I can only see the component preview within the popup after I change a property.

Where it defers is the design system file itself. Some components render correctly in the design system, but these same components don’t in other files (eg the 3 AI buttons from the video attached). That being said, I’m not totally sure, but I think these 3 buttons were not rendering correctly yesterday in the design system file as well, but I might be wrong. Another difference with the design system file is that I can see the preview simply clicking the component in the asset panel, not needing to change a property in the popup. If I refresh the file, the preview that had reappeared will not be visible anymore however.

To answer your initial question, I noticed most of the issue components had variable modes, but not all unfortunately. There’s one very simple (Buttons - 18. Chat button), which is only an icon within a shape, but also has preview render issue.

I create this new file and set the edit access to anyone. Let me know if you’re able to access it, or if you need anything more from me, and thanks a lot for looking into this issue.

Thanks for the additional attachment and context. Since it’s pretty clear from your videos that something isn’t working quite right, I created a ticket for you so our Technical Quality team can investigate more closely. I included both videos and the file you shared, and you should get an email notification shortly. Feel free to reply to that with any additional details I didn’t include; I tried to keep it fairly concise, so you’re welcome to highlight anything else you feel is important to understanding which components display which behavior.

Thanks again for providing so much detail, and thank you for your patience!
