Can't select inner elements on Figma Make

I created an app with Figma Make and I'm trying to select an element inside a container with the pointer tool. However, because there's a shimmer effect layer over the container, I can't select any of the objects underneath, only this shimmer layer. How do I select the elements inside / beneath it?

TAB!! Selecting a layer and pressing <Tab> navigates through elements until I can reach the one I want. Thanks for helping!

Hi @Gayani_S , it seems to be a ShimmerLayer layer generated by Figma Make AI (I asked "add a shimmer effect" and it added this layer over the design).

  • Using Enter does not drill into the container.
  • are you talking about "Edit selection as layers"? There's no "Select layer" in the context menu

It's a rather annoying issue, I can only select the ShimmerLayer and I have to hunt for the element I want in the code...

Hey @Luciano, thanks for reaching out!

Just to make sure I’m troubleshooting from the right angle, is the shimmer effect a component, a standalone layer, or something generated by Figma Make's AI? That'll help me figure out the best path forward.

In the meantime, it's worth trying a couple of things:

  1. Click once to select the shimmer layer, then press Enter to drill into the container and access the elements underneath
  2. Right-click the shimmer layer and look for "Select layer" in the context menu — this can sometimes let you navigate to layers beneath it directly

Let me know how you get on and I’ll take it from there!

That's a great find! Tab is such a handy one for navigating through layered elements, and it's not always the most obvious first instinct when Enter doesn't work.

If anything else comes up with your Figma Make project, feel free to reach out again, we're always here.
