Can't paste images (directly within Figma) anywhere in any page or frame anymore

ZoeError Remakes

Hello.

I was recently running into a problem today when I was trying to paste an image into my frame a while ago:

Files failed to import…

File format not recognized or failed to convert [filename].png

Whenever I paste an image into a frame, Figma tells me that the image format is allegedly not recognized or failed to convert.

A popup message in red also appears as well:

Image file [filename].png import failed

This doesn’t just happen on one of my files, but to all of my files on my drafts as well, but this only happens when I copy an image from another page or frame using Ctrl+Shift+C (because I use a Windows device).

However, pasting images from the Internet and other sources outside of Figma Design worked fine for me.

How do I fix or prevent this error from happening again?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Zoe,

Dave here from Figma’s community support 👋

Sorry you’re running into this, I know how frustrating it is when something simple like copy paste suddenly stops working. From what you’ve described, the key detail is using Ctrl + Shift + C. That shortcut copies the object as a PNG, rather than copying the original layer itself. When you paste that back in, Figma tries to treat it as an image import, which can sometimes fail with errors like the one you’re seeing.

A few things to try:

  • Use Ctrl + C / Ctrl + V instead (this copies the actual layer rather than converting it)
  • If you do need it as an image, try exporting it as a PNG first, then reimporting it
  • Paste onto an empty area of the canvas first, then move it into your frame

A bit of context that might help:

  • Pasting from clipboard creates a new layer with the image as a fill
  • Very large images can get resized automatically
  • Copying from some sources or formats can occasionally cause conversion issues

Since it’s happening across multiple files, this is most likely tied to how the image is being copied rather than a specific file issue. If it still happens even with normal copy paste, let me know and we can dig a bit deeper together 👍

But I was trying to copy layers as PNGs. And this still pops up:

The same errors I’m getting just like what happened earlier.

Is this a bug or a recent update?

Here on my Google Chrome, I also can’t paste images. The same error has been happening since April 13. I’m on the latest version of the browser.

UPDATE: Copying and pasting PNGs directly within Figma now works for me again. Maybe some kind of bug was causing the error earlier.

When I press Ctrl+V, the copied image from another page now gets pasted as I usually expected.

Oh, thank goodness it’s working again! This was driving me crazy for the past week. Thanks @ZoeError Remakes for taking the time to report the issue!
