Can’t Edit Text Layers Anywhere in Figma—Not Component, Not Locked, Tried Everything

Hey all,

I’m suddenly unable to edit any text layers in Figma, across all files, pages, and even brand new files—affecting both my main and secondary accounts.

What’s happening:

  • Double-click and “Enter” don’t let me edit text—not in place, not in the side panel.

  • Typography controls (font, size, etc.) are greyed out for every text layer I select.

  • I can move/resize elements, change color, and create new shapes just fine.

  • This started suddenly, across both Figma browser and desktop app.

What I’ve already tried:

  • Checked layer is NOT locked, not a component, and not a nested/grouped selection.

  • Checked on different pages, old files, new files—issue persists everywhere.

  • Created a totally new Figma file—still can’t edit any text, not even “Inter” font.

  • Swapped between browser (Chrome/Incognito) and the desktop app.

  • Logged out/in, refreshed, cleared cache/cookies, no effect.

  • No issues with account permissions (“can edit” everywhere), and not a FigJam file.

  • No overlays, masks, or hidden layers blocking interaction.

This is literally blocking our workflow and is reproducible on multiple networks on my device. Seems like a recent Figma bug or server regression?

Can anyone else confirm/replicate, or offer a workaround?
Any response from the Figma team on a fix?

Thanks,
Djah Andrews

I am also having the same issue, every text box I select has text editing options grayed out, i’ve tried restarting and such. I also get no x for the textbox size (it should be 477 x 16) instead i get the “glyph missing” box icon. This is only happening on Chrome though.

Hi @Natson13 , @EvelynUpchurch , sorry to hear this is disrupting your work! To help us understand what’s happening, it would be really helpful for our internal team to review the files where you’re seeing the issue.

If possible, please follow these steps:

  1. Share edit access to the affected files with support-share@figma.com. This is our official Support account, and only a limited group from Support and Engineering will access the files to help reproduce the issue. You won’t be charged for this.

  2. Submit a bug report via the Support Hub here: https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and include direct URLs to the files you’ve shared.

Once that’s done, feel free to let me know here and I can help escalate your case for review.

Not sure if I put this up before.

The way I got around it was to download the desktop application and open the file there. The last time it happened the application needed to update, so maybe it is when there is a software on the platform and it ‘needs a jolt’ to get back on track. That then resolved the problem everywhere.

Hope this helps

Hey @Natson13 , thanks for the update and sharing this!

That’s a helpful workaround, and I’m glad to hear switching to the desktop app (and updating it) got things back on track for you. Calling this out will definitely help others who might run into the same behavior.

If you notice the issue returning or see any patterns around when it happens (for example, after updates or in specific files), please don’t hesitate to let us know by reporting it via the Support Hub so the team can investigate further. Thanks!
