Sometimes I inadvertently turn an image into a background fill on a frame, instead of including the image as an object inside the frame. (Not sure how, but this happens.) Currently there seems to be no way to fix this. You can’t select the image in the frame. If you ungroup the frame, the frame is gone and so is the background image.

There is supposed to be a way to copy the image from the Fill properties, but it’s not working for me.

Command + C doesn’t copy the image, and there is no context menu if I right click on the thumbnail.

Using Figma Desktop App version 126.7.10 on a Silicon Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.5.2

Hi @Dustin_Hansen2, thanks for reaching out about this!

I understand how this must be disrupting your workflow. Thanks for the context and for including your app version and OS, that's really useful. It seems like two things going on here, so let me take them separately.

On selecting the image inside the frame: images in Figma aren't a layer type, they're a fill. So when an image lands on a frame's fill it genuinely isn't selectable on canvas, and ungrouping removes the frame it was attached to. Not a great experience when it happens by accident though, so I hear you.

On getting the image back out, one detail matters a lot: you'll want to click the fill row in the right sidebar (the row highlights) rather than the thumbnail swatch, which opens the color picker instead. From there:

  1. Select the frame → click the fill row so it's highlighted
  2. ⌘C
  3. Select the target layer or frame → ⌘V

Please use plain ⌘C, not Copy properties (⌥⌘C)  that one copies every supported property, so things like corner radius come along for the ride. If that still does nothing on your end, could you share:

  • A quick screen recording of the fill row selected and the ⌘C press
  • Whether it also fails at figma.com in a browser, or only in the desktop app

We fixed the "can't copy from image fill" regression last year, so if this is a regression, I want to get it in front of the team with a solid repro rather than guess. In the meantime, to avoid being blocked: select the frame and export the image from the Export section of the right sidebar (PNG at 2x or higher), then drop that file back onto the canvas as its own layer.

Add images and videos to designs has more on how fills work if it's helpful. Let me know how the recording looks and we'll take it from there!
