Can't change button text or icon in figma prototype when changing states?

I have a button component from ShadCN, using the shadcn design library.

I have a drawer. I want the button to change from hide to show as the drawer opens and closes. 

I’ve built a dead simple component with an open and closed state. Yet somehow, the only way to change the button text is to force it using variables… and since the icon is a nested symbol, it seems that it isn’t possible to change it. 

This is not how it used to work, and I'm incensed that this simple operation isn’t possible anymore. Just so maddening.
