Bug Report – Variable Mismatch After Copy-Pasting Images in Figma

I’d like to report an issue we encountered while working with variables in Figma.

When we copy and paste an image component that uses variables (e.g., mode-specific variants or data-driven display), the pasted version sometimes presents different variable information than the original. This inconsistency causes the visuals to break and makes it impossible to perform a clean, consistent demo—especially when the variables are tied to color tokens or conditional content.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Copy a component that includes variable-bound images or properties.

  2. Paste it into the same or a different file/page.

  3. Observe that the variable values (such as mode tokens, booleans, or bound text) may change or reset.

This inconsistency is affecting our design workflow and stakeholder presentations. Please let us know if this is a known issue, or if there’s a recommended workaround.

Hey @DSZoe - sorry for the inconsistency. Completely understand that it may be a bad look when you’re presenting, and I’d like to help as much as I can. First, it would be super helpful if we can review the file you’re encountering this on.

Are you able to share edit access to it with us? If so, can you please share that access to support-share@figma.com and let me know the name of the file. If you can’t that’s no problem.

Also - you mentioned stakeholder presentations. Just to check: are you using Figma slides, or just have this flowing in a Figma file?
