BUG: Figma Slides • Component Variants & Layers Panel

drew_covi

While attempting to manage components for use in our Figma Slides Templates, we’ve found that you’re essentially unable to view the layers panel unless they are  moved into a slide, which then means this “components” slide is surfaced as a Slide Page Template.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Enter Design Mode
  2. Create a component with multiple variants defined (icons with multiple variants)
  3. Enter the Grid View
  4. Drag the Master Component with variants off a slide into the stage.
  5. Notice the Layers panel disappears.

Expected behavior:

I should be able to house master components, variants, etc without publishing them. Ideally this is a self contained canvas for organizational purposes, but even if they simply live on the stage, these layers should behave like all layers regardless of context. The Layers panel should appear.

Hi @drew_covi

I've checked with our product team about this, and they've confirmed that this is currently the intended behavior - though we recognize it's not ideal.

The good news is that your feedback has been added to our list of considerations for future improvements. While I can't provide a specific timeline for implementation at this point, we definitely see the value in what you're suggesting.

We'll be sure to update this thread if and when changes are made to address this limitation.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm checking with our internal team while I think it an intended behavior at the moment. A help center article mentions:

The Layers section on the left sidebar gives you access to the layers of your currently selected object. Any objects you add to the slide, such as frames, text, or images, will be visible here.

I will get back to you when I have anything I can share with you.

Thanks for your patience.

Thanks Toku! I think the Layers section should appear whenever any object is selected whether its on a slide or not, but let me know!

Thanks @y_toku!

When possible maybe double check with the team on  an additional gap. When dragging components off the slide (in the tiled view) and back into the slide, sometimes that layer panel updates for the slide to show the component. Sometimes it does not, and I’m forced to create a new slide to have those layers show again.
