Question

Average engagement time per session showing 0 on google analytics

Hi everyone,

I published a site using Figma Make and integrated my Google Analytics (GA4) tracking ID via the native settings.

While basic metrics like total visits, active users, and real-time pageviews are tracking perfectly, my Average Engagement Time is showing up as completely blank or zero.

I have verified that Enhanced Measurement is enabled on the GA4 side, and I am definitely spending enough time actively browsing the site for it to trigger an engaged session.

Any guidance or workarounds would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, @Mattie! Thanks for your post and for sharing what you’ve already checked! I think the next useful check is whether GA4 is receiving engagement-time data alongside your pageviews.

Google measures engagement time using the engagement_time_msec parameter on events. This is collected automatically, so having Enhanced Measurement enabled doesn’t necessarily confirm that this part is working (Google explains the process here).

How long ago did you add GA4? If tracking was added recently, it can take 24 to 48 hours for standard reports to populate, according to Google’s reporting guidance. If you added it more than 48 hours ago, try the following:

  1. Open the published site directly in a browser with blockers disabled. Keep it in focus for around a minute, interact with it, then switch to another tab.
  2. Connect through Google Tag Assistant to enable debugging, then check GA4’s Admin > Data display > DebugView. Look for user_engagement and inspect event parameters for a positive engagement_time_msec value. It’s normal for initial events such as session_start to lack this parameter (DebugView instructions for reference).

If DebugView stays empty, check your cookie consent settings too - Google notes that events may not appear there when Analytics cookie consent hasn’t been given.

Let me know if this doesn’t help, though, and we’ll keep troubleshooting this together. Cheers!
